Every day, more than 1,200 people work with the YMCAs of Québec network, providing a variety of services that create positive change in people’s lives. 

Under the supervision of the Camp YMCA Kanawana director, the incumbent is responsible for coordinating and supervising all the activities under their responsibility. They coordinate the recruitment, selection, and training of the main summer camp team. They oversee the proper and sound management of summer camp and day camp operations. They manage and supervise the production of various reports and, as part of their duties, organize or participate as a representative in committees, working groups, and other groups.

Tasks and Roles

  • Plan, lead, organize, and control all YMCA Kanawana summer camp and day camp training activities;  
  • Ensure the quality of all the services offered under their responsibility;
  • Ensure the sound and rigorous operational management of all YMCA Kanawana summer camp and day camp activities; 
  • Develop high-quality programming that complies with Camp YMCA Kanawana’s environmental and people-centred approach;
  • In collaboration with their team, review all programs annually and make sure the association’s quality standards are integrated and respected;
  • Apply risk and safety management standards at all times in the management of activity facilities and YMCA Kanawana expedition programs, in compliance with the highest industry standards (ACQ, AEQ, YMCA Canada, MAPAQ, CITQ, fédérations de plein air, etc.);
  • Ensure the association’s operational policies and procedures, such as payroll processing, contract management, staff file management, departures, and others are complied with and applied and make sure information and related documents are duly filled in.
  • Oversee the management of all human resources under their responsibility (summer camp and day camp) regarding hiring, onboarding, welcoming, and training;
  • Advise and supervise all employees under their responsibility and evaluate their performance;
  • Follow up with payroll when required (timesheets, pay corrections, code additions, etc.);
  • Manage problematic cases in collaboration with the summer camp director, implementing the means and action plans, performing the required follow-ups, and taking the appropriate measures (e.g., warnings, suspensions, or dismissals) to do so;  
  • Plan and organize employee appreciation activities at the end of the summer season or at any other relevant time. 
  • With the outdoor recreation centre team, manage the purchasing of equipment, materials, and other items for the YMCA Kanawana summer camp within the defined parameters and oversee inventory management.   
  • In collaboration with the director, ensure a quality customer experience and offer high-quality customer service with all stakeholders (customers, partners, donors, etc.);
  • When needed, collect, consolidate, and share complaints, comments, and suggestions from customers with concerned parties, and oversee resolution control, processing, and follow-ups;
  • Stay informed on the needs of current and potential customers as well as those of the surrounding community.  

Required Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in recreation, education, outdoor recreation, or any other relevant field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of summer camp or adventure tourism coordination experience or 10 years of day camp experience;
  • Canoe-camping expedition experience or any additional tourism or hotel experience is considered an asset;
  • Experience in personnel management in a seasonal coaching context.
  • Good knowledge of certified summer camps and adventure tourism settings
  • Good knowledge of risk management and administrative management to oversee various groups in an outdoor recreational setting;
  • Fluency in French and English, spoken and written.
