How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team: The Field Staff position is responsible for assisting the Environmental Technologist and Crew Leads to complete meadow restoration and invasive species management activities including site preparation, seeding, monitoring, and herbicide application. Staff will learn relevant skills, techniques, and best management practices for meadow restoration and invasive species management.
This position plays an integral role in the on-ground implementation of meadow restoration and ecosystem enhancement through the management of invasive species.
Major Responsibilities:
- Participates in the implementation of meadow restoration and adaptive management activities including site prep, mowing, tilling, seeding and invasive species management.
- Directs the public to project notice signage and possibly providing supervisor contact information for additional information and inquiries, referring detailed questions and complaints to supervisor
- Participates in the daily safety meetings including tailgate meetings, hazard identification and emergency planning
- Assists with operation and maintenance of equipment and vehicles, performs circle and other health and safety checks. Reports potential maintenance requirements to supervisor.
- Maintains equipment (storage, organization, minor repairs)
- Participates in application of appropriate pesticides under supervision by a licensed pesticide applicator.
- Operates appropriate machinery and equipment required to execute work duties related to specific project/program area (handsaws, drills, line trimmers, sprayers, generators, tractors, etc.)
- Incumbents may also be assigned other duties
What will you need to succeed:
Education (degree/diploma/certifications/licenses)
- Minimum pursuing a post-secondary diploma or degree in a related field
- Valid Class G2 Driver’s License
- Valid Standard First Aid & CPR/AED Level C Certification
Knowledge/Skill/Ability - Competencies
- Familiar with basic equipment and power tools
- Ability to communicate effectively with tact and courtesy
- Demonstrated ability to proactively identify problems in a timely manner, seeking the appropriate level of support to solve issues
- Proficiency in MS Office for general office communications (I.e., mail, spreadsheet and word processing software, including online enablement software such as MS teams and SharePoint)
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act, related Regulations and legislation
- Required to lift or carry objects that could weigh up to 45 lbs
- Knowledge of meadow restoration processes/procedures.
- Demonstrated knowledge of native and invasive plants and plant identification skills.
- Ability and aptitude to work outdoor in adverse conditions.
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team.
