How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:

The Invasive Species Management Field Staff position is responsible for assisting Crew Leads to complete invasive species activities including site preparation, manual removal, monitoring, and herbicide application. Staff will learn relevant skills, techniques, and best management practices for invasive species management. Field staff will assist crew leads and help actively participate in the safe operation and maintenance of a range of tools and equipment including hand tools, powered brush cutters and backpack sprayers.

This position plays an integral role in the on-ground implementation of ecological restoration and ecosystem enhancement through the management of invasive species. Occupational health and safety is a major responsibility of this position.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Participates in the implementation of invasive species management projects within TRCA’s jurisdiction by way of manual or mechanical plant removal and/or herbicide application and monitoring.
  • Participates in application of appropriate herbicides following best management practices under supervision by a licensed pesticide applicator.
  • Operates appropriate machinery and equipment required to execute work duties related to specific project/program area (i.e., chainsaws, drills, line trimmers, generators, tractors, etc.)
  • Directs the public to project notice signage and possibly providing contact information for additional information and inquiries, referring detailed questions and complaints to supervisor.
  • Participates in the daily safety meetings including tailgate meetings, hazard identification and emergency planning.
  • Assists with maintenance of equipment and vehicles, performs circle and other health and safety checks. Reports potential maintenance requirements to supervisor.
  • Incumbents may also be assigned other duties.

What will you need to succeed:

  • Minimum pursuing a post-secondary diploma or degree in a related field
  • Valid Class G2 Driver’s License
  • Valid Standard First Aid & CPR/AED Level C Certification is an asset.
  • Knowledge of pesticide legislation and invasive species best management practices
  • Demonstrated knowledge of native and invasive plants and plant identification skills. 
  • Ability and aptitude to work outdoor in adverse conditions.
  • Familiarity with mapping natural landscape features and reading maps.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with tact and courtesy.
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively identify problems in a timely manner, seeking the appropriate level of support to solve issues. 
  • Proficiency in MS Office for general office communications (I.e., email, spreadsheet and word processing software, including online enablement software such as MS teams and SharePoint, knowledge of ESRI ArcMap and FieldMaps is an asset).
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act, related Regulations and legislation
  • Required to lift or carry objects that could weigh up to 45lbs.
  • Candidates will be required to be clean shaven to properly fit a respirator.
