How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:

The Education Interpreter delivers hands-on environmental, cultural heritage, nature, recreation, and renewable energy programs (dependent on location) to visitors and visitor groups while playing an active role in customer experience. Using artifacts, reproduction items, and demonstrating historical trades, education interpreters encourage visitors of all ages to reflect and learn about Ontario's past.

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Guides and leads visitors and visitor groups to TRCA’s sites and facilities on established programs focused on environmental, cultural heritage, nature, recreation, and renewable energy (dependent on location)
  • Learns program content to be able to effectively deliver interactive programs to various audiences
  • Ensures program equipment/supplies including artifacts are well maintained, clean and stored appropriately
  • Provides support in program development and administrative tasks as required
  • Delivers programs at offsite locations (libraries, community fairs etc) and virtually as needed
  • Delivering programs/information to audiences of various ages requires adapting style to ensure audience appropriateness

 

What will you need to succeed:

Education (degree/diploma/certifications/licenses)

  • Minimum pursuing a post-secondary diploma or degree in a related field
  • Successful completion of a Vulnerable Sector Screening. Employees/candidates under the age of eighteen (18) years are not eligible to have a VSS, therefore will not be required

Experience

  • 2+ years of experience working with children in a group setting
  • Experience working with large groups in delivering programs and activities
  • Previous experience delivering environmental, nature or historical programs

 

Knowledge/Skill/Ability - Competencies

  • Knowledge of 19th century Canadian social history, natural history, or environmentally related discipline (location dependent) 
  • Able to comprehend written documentation and procedural guidelines; skilled in writing clear correspondence (concise, logical, grammatically correct)
  • Ability to deliver programs/information to audiences of various ages, adapting style to ensure audience appropriateness
  • Experience interacting and connecting with persons of various social, cultural, or economic backgrounds; at ease with a variety of audiences 
  • Strong communication skills to provide clear and concise communication in both non-emergency and emergency situations
  • Able to comprehend written documentation and procedural guidelines
  • Must be flexible to work all required shifts, including weekends and holidays
  • Wearing a reproduction historical costume is a key component of this position.
