How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:

The Technician, Environmental (Wildlife) is responsible for implementing TRCA’s wildlife programs within the GTA. Wildlife programs include the Canada Goose Management program, design and implementation of species at risk habitats, construction and installation of essential wildlife habitats, including nesting/roosting boxes, colonial waterbird habitat management, as well as beaver habitat mitigation. 

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Operates and maintains equipment (trailers, boats etc.) and troubleshoots and problem solves equipment issues.
  • Implements wildlife programs including Canada Goose and Mute Swan management; essential wildlife habitat creation, including species at risk; and beaver conflict mitigation.
  • Ensures quality control measures are included into all areas of work.
  • Assists with the coordination of materials, equipment and services as required.
  • Participates in daily safety meetings including tailgate meetings, hazard identification and emergency planning.
  • Ensures compliance with occupational health & safety policies and practices, and other TRCA policies, as applicable in various work environments.
  • Provides technical expertise on wildlife habitat and management, southern Ontario fauna, including species at risk, natural cover restoration and management projects including restoration plan interpretation, safe access, etc.
  • Incumbents may also be assigned other duties.

 

What will you need to succeed:

Education (degree/diploma/certifications/licenses)

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in Environmental Sciences, Biology, Ecology, or a related field
  • Valid Ontario Class G driver's license

 

Experience

  • 2+ years experience working on wildlife programs or ecological restoration or management
  • 2+ years of boating experience, including trailering

 

Knowledge/Skill/Ability - Competencies

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and Highway Traffic Act (Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7, Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration (CVOR))
  • Knowledge of Species at Risk in Ontario
  • Knowledge of and experience operating and maintaining equipment including boats and trailers and small toolsSound data management skills; experience working with databases and GIS software
  • Sound communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills to work effectively with the team
  • Experience interacting and connecting with persons of various social, cultural, or economic backgrounds; at ease with a variety of audiences
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to communicate project status for various audiences.
  • Able to self-manage workload and prioritize tasks as an ongoing challenge in a frequently fluctuating environment
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite, including online software such as MS teams, WebEx, and SharePoint); advanced MS Excel capabilities for analysis, data visualization
