Job Title:         Manager, Tax

Department:    Penguin Group of Companies, Corporate Tax

 

Position Summary

As a member of the Corporate Tax team, the Tax Manager will be an integral part of the tax planning and compliance processes of the Penguin group of businesses. This would include undertaking tax analyses, providing tax advice, leading the team in the completion of tax returns, and addressing CRA queries, objections and appeals.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the tax return process, which includes preparation of calculations and reconciling schedules, and reviewing the work of the tax analysts for the purpose of completing the returns;
  • Maintain proper records and working paper schedules in supporting the tax returns and the ACB of all properties;
  • Provide guidance to the team to continue to professionally develop the tax analysts and promote team and company cohesiveness;
  • Interface and coordinate with tax auditors and government agencies and work with the team to provide responses to address audit queries and disputes;
  • Work with external tax, accounting and legal firms to support all tax processes of the business;
  • Provide tax advice to various levels of staff as well as to senior management on an as-needed basis;
  • Prepare and maintain taxable income projections and tax cash flows on an entity-by-entity basis;
  • Perform special projects and assignments as required;

 

Academic/Professional Requirements:

  • Chartered Professional Accountant designation (CPA);
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting.

 

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Strong tax and financial accounting knowledge;
  • Minimum of 5 years exposure to a complex Canadian corporate tax environment - exposure to real estate would be an asset;
  • Completion of the CICA In-depth tax course would be an asset;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate across all levels within the company as well as with external parties;
  • Strong ability to work independently;
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
