SUMMARY:

 

As a member of the peopleCare Communities, this position works under the direction of the Director of Lifestyle & Leisure to assist with the assessment of  the life enrichment needs of each resident related to the physical, psychological, social, recreational and spiritual needs in accordance with peopleCare standards and the Retirement Home Act, 2010 (RHA) as well as the Retirement Home Regulatory Authority (RHRA).

 

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

 

  • Assists in the institution of internal and external programs that enriches the lives of each resident.
  • Assists to interview and assess residents’ social history, physical ability and behaviours, spiritual lifestyle, important memories and losses, family dynamics and contacts, dietary requirements and language abilities.
  • Assists with the management of the volunteer program, including orientation, motivation and development of the volunteers.
  • Maintains awareness of changes in conditions or behaviours of residents  and reports changes to the appropriate person

 

  • Maintains records of participation in programs for each resident
  • Assists to prepare communication tools such as newsletters, posters, notices and calendars
  • Communicates departmental activities to residents, staff, families and the community to encourage participation in programs

 

  • Maintains all required records, reports, statistics in accordance with policies and procedures and legislative requirements
  • Works cooperatively with staff, students, other departments, volunteers and families to meet resident needs
  • Carries out programs of the life enrichment programs as per Director of Lifestyle and Leisure
  • Complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and any Collective Agreements
  • Maintains safe work practices
  • Follows the organizations policies and procedures
  • Operates computer systems within organizational established technology standards
  • Participates in-service education and training  as assigned
  • Participates in committees as requested by Supervisor
  • Maintains confidentiality

 

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

Qualifications:

  1. Secondary education or additional education in recreation or a degree/diploma in gerontology.
  2. Be able to read, write and comfortably communicate in English.
  3. Able to perform physical work.
  4. Fun to be with, organized, sensitive, enthusiastic, patient, tactful and mature.
  5. Must be able to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships with staff, volunteers, residents and families.
  6. Experience in planning, organizing and managing events is an asset.
  7. Current certification in First-Aid and CPR.
  8. Driver’s licence required, with good driving record (past three years) and may also require a bus licence.

 

Physical Requirements

 

  • Work schedules are irregular including evening and weekend work
  • Some lifting, transferring of residents
  • Sitting for long periods at a desk for computer/typing work.
  • Standing for long periods of time during events, activities.
  • Walking short distances and up/down staircases.
  • Typing and/or use of a computer keyboard proficiently.
  • Pulling/pushing/lifting to relocate furniture, gaming pieces, etc. up to 50lbs.
  • Reading/seeing documentation both in paper format and on a computer screen for long periods of time.
  • Bending, kneeling, providing walking support for residents where required.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions due to travel for activities outside the facility
  • Frequent use of visual and auditory senses

 

Responsibilities to Health and Safety

  • Is a competent Worker as defined by the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
  • Is knowledgeable of the responsibilities of a Resident Coordinator, and follows all health and safety policies and procedures.  Completes all safety training as required by peopleCare Inc.
  • Is alert to, remedies, or promptly reports all actual or potential hazardous situations to the Director of Health & Wellness of the home, and/or Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee.
  • Ensures that all reported injuries/illnesses are treated promptly and documented according to policy.
  • Must be knowledgeable of home fire and disaster plan.
