About the Role: 

The Junior Communications Specialist (Writing) will be responsible for creating compelling written content that engages our community and promotes our programs and initiatives. As a writer at the MNO, you will be responsible for producing diverse communication materials, including newsletters, reports, press releases, web posts, mass emails, and social media content.

This role requires someone with a passion for storytelling, a deep respect for Indigenous cultures, and an ability to adapt writing style to suit different platforms and audiences. The ideal candidate will also possess strong attention to detail and a creative approach to narrative-building.

What you will be doing: 

  • Content Creation
    • Write and edit high-quality written content for a variety of audiences, including community members, media, and government partners.
    • Produce and maintain communication materials such as newsletters, press releases, annual reports, speeches, and website content.
    • Craft engaging, informative, and culturally respectful stories that highlight the MNO’s programs, initiatives, and the lived experiences of their citizens.
    • Develop content for social media platforms that fosters engagement, educates the public, and supports the MNO’s goals.
  • Storytelling & Advocacy
    • Work closely with the program and community teams to gather and present stories from the field that highlight the impact of the MNO’s work
    • Ensure that the organization's messages are culturally sensitive, accurate, and reflect the values of the communities we serve.
  • Brand Voice & Consistency
    • Ensure consistent brand messaging across all communication materials.
    • Maintain a strong and culturally appropriate voice that resonates with diverse audiences, including communities, policymakers, and the general public.
    • Contribute to the development of communication strategies and provide input into creative campaigns and initiatives.
  • Editing & Proofreading
    • Review and edit written content to ensure clarity, coherence, and alignment with organizational goals and standards.
    • Ensure that all written materials are free of errors and uphold the highest standards of accuracy and cultural integrity.
    • Proofread other written materials prepared by colleagues.
  • Collaboration & Reporting
    • Work collaboratively with colleagues in other departments to produce integrated communication strategies.
    • Monitor the success of communication efforts, gather feedback, and contribute to regular reporting on key communication metrics.

Qualifications:

  • 2-4 years of experience in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field, with a focus on writing and content creation.
  • A degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field is preferred. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
  • Experience working in a not-for-profit, government or Indigenous-focused environment is highly preferred.
  • Strong portfolio of written work, including articles, reports, speeches, or content created for digital platforms.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills with the ability to craft compelling narratives for diverse audiences.
  • Familiarity with media relations, including writing press releases and working with journalists.
  • Ability to communicate complex issues in a clear, concise, and culturally respectful manner.
  • Strong research skills and the ability to gather and synthesize information from various sources.
  • Familiarity with digital tools and platforms for content creation
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of Métis issues, culture, and the importance of community-based communication.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
  • Creativity, with the ability to find new ways to tell stories that resonate with a broad range of audiences.
