Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive analysis support throughout project lifecycles, from proposal development to construction phase, ensuring timely and effective solutions.
- Collect, prepare, and analyze both structured and unstructured data to support diverse transportation analyses, leveraging data management techniques.
- Synthesize and integrate data from municipal, provincial, and federal sources, along with historical client reports, to inform and enhance project insights.
- Develop and optimize traffic models using a range of specialized software packages, aiming for the most efficient and realistic traffic flow simulations.
- Document analysis workflows and processes meticulously, ensuring replicability and adherence to best practices in transportation analysis.
- Actively contribute to and maintain codebases for existing workflows in VBA, Python, and PowerQuery, enhancing automation and efficiency of data processing tasks.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, memos, and presentations that communicate analysis results and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Staying informed with the latest advancements in transportation engineering, technologies, and methodologies to drive forward-thinking solutions in transportation planning and traffic analysis.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in transportation operations, traffic engineering, or transportation planning. Bachelor’s degree in engineering, or a closely related field is required.
- Proven track record as a Transportation Operations Engineer or in a comparable role within the industry, with a solid understanding of traffic patterns, transportation systems, and advanced proficiency in traffic modeling and simulation software. Direct experience with Synchro, SimTraffic, Vistro, and HCS is essential. Familiarity with Vissim, VISUM, and EMME for macro modeling is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated expertise in parsing datasets using programming languages such as Python and R. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft applications is required, including strong practical knowledge of PowerBI, Power Query, and Excel, to support sophisticated data analysis and visualization tasks.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams and adapt to evolving project requirements, maintaining high levels of organization and attention to detail across multiple concurrent tasks.
- Applied understanding of planning and design standards from the City of Calgary, Alberta Transportation, and the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC), alongside other national and international standards.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities, with proven experience in effectively conveying complex and technical analysis results to decision-makers. Must have a track record of producing clear and impactful technical memos, briefings, and reports.
- Must hold a Class 5 Driver’s license or in progress of obtaining a Class 5 license.
- Strong analytical capabilities with a knack for identifying transportation issues, devising innovative solutions, and making informed decisions based on comprehensive data analysis.

The salary range for this position is $65,000 - $78,000 per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
