As a Data Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining scalable data pipelines and infrastructure. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure efficient data processing, storage, and accessibility for analytical and operational purposes.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING IN THE ROLE:
- Programming Languages: Proficiency in languages such as Python, Java, or Scala is crucial for data engineering tasks. Python is widely used for its versatility and extensive libraries in the data ecosystem.
- SQL and Database Management: Strong knowledge of SQL is essential for working with relational databases. Data engineers should be proficient in designing, optimizing, and managing databases.
- Big Data Technologies: Familiarity with big data technologies like Databricks, Apache Hadoop, Apache Spark (PySpark), and Apache Kafka is crucial. These tools are commonly used for processing and managing large volumes of data.
- ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) Processes: Expertise in designing and implementing ETL processes is a core skill for data engineers. This involves extracting data from various sources, transforming it, and loading it into a target database.
- Data Modeling: Understanding how to design effective scalable data models is essential. This includes knowledge of concepts like normalization, denormalization, and familiarity with tools like ERD (Entity-Relationship Diagrams). Additionally understanding and implementation of Delta Lake for managing reliable data lakes is key.
- Cloud Platforms: Proficiency with cloud platforms like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP) is important as many organizations are adopting cloud-based solutions for data storage and processing.
- Data Orchestration: Knowledge of orchestration tools like Azure Data Factory or Apache Airflow for managing data workflows.
- Data Warehousing: Knowledge of data warehousing concepts and tools such as Amazon Redshift, Google BigQuery, Azure Synapse, or Snowflake is valuable for building and managing large-scale data warehouses.
- Version Control Systems: Experience with version control systems like Git is important for collaboration and code management in a team environment.
- Data Quality and Validation: Ensuring data quality and implementing validation processes is crucial. Data engineers should be skilled in identifying and handling anomalies, errors, and missing data.
- Monitoring and Logging: These are crucial skills for a data engineer, enabling proactive issue detection, troubleshooting, resource optimization, and documentation, ensuring the reliability, performance, and transparency of data pipelines.
