The Restorative Care Aide (RCA) is responsible for the development and implementation of both individual and group functional restoration programs based on assessed resident needs or as referred by a physiotherapist. The goal of the restoration program is to assist residents to maintain and improve their functional abilities in order to perform activities of daily living with minimal assistance. The Restorative Care Aide works in co-operation with other healthcare providers and works under the guidance of a Physiotherapist.
The Restorative Care Aide implements a number of restorative programs throughout the day... The following is a general overview of the types of activities that may be performed by the Restorative Care Aide.
Group exercises: As an assistant to the exercise program, the RCA will remain weight bearing and assist residents to move their limbs through the directed range of motion. To support the limb or joint, the RCA may need to crouch, bend and reach forward
Individual Exercises
Resident Care Aides will work one on one with residents to facilitate exercise and ROM activities outlined in the restorative care plan. The RCA is typically standing during this activity but may be seated periodically. The RCA may be required to complete a restorative assessment to evaluate progress and determine applicable activities/exercises.
Activities of Daily Living
The RCA may work individually with residents to perform activities of daily living. The goal is to assist and support the residents to perform the activity by themselves. This may involve teaching procedural strategies, providing assistive devices and supporting practice sessions with the resident. Activities may include getting out of bed, dental care, self-grooming, getting dressed/undressed, eating and drinking. The RCA will work with the resident in their room, in the therapy room or in the dining hall.
Restorative walking program
To assist with walking, the RCA may grasp a gait belt worn by the resident and stand to the side or behind the resident. The RCA guides and supports the resident who may become unstable or fatigued and require additional effort to support (unable to quantify). Alternatively, the RCA may stand in front of the resident and slowly move a walker forward of the resident while another staff member is holding the resident.
