The Opportunity
With this unique opportunity, the Operations Engineer in Training – NGL, will first be immersed with Operations, working as a Summer Relief Operator at our WRF-1 site. Under the general direction of the Lead Operator, this position is responsible for the efficient and safe operation of the Wolf Recovery Facility (WRF 1) and associated pipelines.
While working as a Summer Relief Operator at WRF1, this is a camp-based position, located at Marianna Lakes, one hour south of Fort McMurray. In the role you will be working 7 days on / 7 days off with the possibility of night shift coverage if required. Transportation to site is provided from major airports in Western Canada or via pool vehicles from select locations.
Following this Summer Relief Operator, under the direction of the Engineering Manager, NGL, the Operations Engineer in Training – NGL will transition to an office based engineering position, leveraging their summer operating experience to inform their engineering practice. This will be a predominantly office-based position, located in either Calgary or Fort Saskatchewan, where some travel to field locations will be required.

Key Responsibilities
- Perform plant rounds and readings to ensure equipment is operating within process parameters
- Identify location and operation of all plant equipment and respond quickly to process upsets while maintaining operations best practices, safety of facility, and to minimize plant downtime
- Isolate and prepare equipment for maintenance, performing lock-out and tag out and ensuring zero energy isolation is achieved; and properly identify, report and communicate plant equipment and safety deviations through Work Orders, Hazard ID’s and Operations Log
- Complete assigned tasks; Work Orders, Safety Checklists, Job Hazard Assessments
- Participate in procedure review safety bypass, lock-out and tag-out as outlined in the operations training program
- Learn the operations of all HMI systems efficiently. Troubleshoot and communicate process deviations and upsets to the Lead Operator
- Assist and participate in EHS meetings, inspections and all other EHS requirements
- Report any health, safety, security, or environmental concerns through HSE management system incident reporting
- Responsible for good housekeeping practices throughout the site through weekly / monthly housekeeping duties
- Provides vacation coverage for other Outside Operators within the facility if requested and deemed competent with the possibility of covering nightshift
- Participate in the Management of Change (MOC) process, supporting with document markups
- Support various technical, cost and project management activities
- Participate in providing technical support to operations
- Participate in Project Design Reviews
- Support the development of engineering procedures, processes and controls
- Participate in the commissioning and startup of various projects/MOC’s, both from the office, and from various field locations
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, or a related degree, from an APEGA recognized engineering program.
- Strong academic background with a focus on fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and process control.
- Knowledge or coursework in natural gas liquids (NGL), petrochemical processes, or related energy industries.
- Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Projects, Visio) and engineering software (e.g., process simulation).
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving and communication skills.
- Ability to work in a team-oriented, face-paced environment.
- Valid Class 5 Drivers License and satisfactory driver’s abstract
- This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to the relevant requirements of our Alcohol and Drug Policy which includes pre-employment testing
