How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:

The Field Staff, Restoration & Infrastructure will work as a team to implement TRCA’s wildlife programs within the GTA. The wildlife program includes the Canada Goose Management program, where staff will work to humanely manage goose reproduction and relocate adult geese during their moult. This position will also include construction and installation of essential wildlife habitat, including nesting/roosting boxes, and colonial waterbird habitat management, as well as beaver habitat mitigation.  Occupational health and safety is a major responsibility of this position. Executes a variety of field work activities in support of ongoing restoration and infrastructure projects.

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the implementation of the Canada Goose Management program, including watercraft-based nest searching and management.
  • Assist with wildlife conflict management, including beaver habitat mitigation.
  • Assist with essential wildlife habitat enhancement efforts, through the installation of wildlife structures and colonial waterbird habitat management.
  • Collects and inputs field data according to project scope.
  • Assists with the transportation of materials to and from sites as required.
  • Participates in the daily safety meetings including tailgate meetings, hazard identification and emergency planning.
  • Operate equipment required to execute work duties related to the project, including operating and trailering 14-18’ boats.
  • Operates appropriate machinery and equipment required to execute work duties related to specific project/program area (i.e., chainsaws, drills, line trimmers, generators, skid steers, packers, UTVs, tractors, etc.)
  • Assists with maintenance of equipment and vehicles, performs circle and other health and safety checks. Reports potential maintenance requirements to supervisor.
  • Incumbents may also be assigned other duties.

 

What will you need to succeed:

 

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • Minimum pursuing a post-secondary diploma or degree in a related field an asset.
  • Valid Class G2 Driver’s License
  • Valid Standard First Aid & CPR/AED Level C Certification an asset
  • Background in biology, environmental sciences, environmental studies, ecology, ecosystem management, wildlife management, etc. 

 

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

  • Familiar with wildlife ecology and identification. 
  • Good physical fitness required to perform activities.  
  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse conditions and in adverse environments. 
  • Familiar with boating (14-18’ boats) and boat trailering. 
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team. 
  • Flexibility to work extended hours and evenings. 
  • Familiar with basic equipment and power tools
  • Ability to communicate effectively with tact and courtesy.
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively identify problems in a timely manner, seeking the appropriate level of support to solve issues. 
  • Proficiency in MS Office for general office communications (I.e., mail, spreadsheet and word processing software, including online enablement software such as MS teams and SharePoint)
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act, related Regulations and legislation
  • Required to lift or carry objects that could weigh up to 50lbs.
