Position Overview

The Controller will oversee all financial and accounting activities within the organization. This role demands a strategic thinker with strong leadership skills and a deep understanding of financial management. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in managing financial operations, ensuring compliance, driving process improvements, and leading an accounting system conversion. As a change agent, the Controller will lead the modernization of the finance operations function, leveraging technology and innovation to enhance existing financial processes and systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and mentor the accounting team of 9 (2 direct reports and 7 indirect reports), providing guidance and support.
  • Oversee financial reporting, accounting, tax, compliance and financial transaction processing (AP, AR, billing, treasury) functions, with a focus on identifying areas for improvement.
  • Responsible for monthly, quarterly and year-end closing, and compliance with all financial reporting requirements, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of reports.
  • Maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure compliance and efficiency, with a focus on identifying areas for improvement.
  • Oversee financial processes across the company, including departments outside of finance, ensuring internal controls are maintained and updated as required.
  • Main point of contact with external auditors, the audit process and the preparation of the annual audited financial statements.
  • Manage corporate tax, foreign bureau tax and commodity tax audits, working with outside advisors to prepare corporate tax filings and ensure regulatory filings are completed on a timely basis.
  • Manage the annual corporate insurance renewal process.
  • Provide client contract review for billing and payment terms and taxation.
  • Play a leadership role in the accounting system conversion in the next 18-24 months, ensuring seamless integration and minimal disruption to operations.
  • Research and recommend accounting treatments for new and changing transactions.
  • Ensure compliance with ASPE, tax regulations, and internal policies.
  • Collaborate with other departments to support overall business objectives and initiatives.
  • Provide strategic financial insights and recommendations to senior management to support decision-making.

Qualifications:

  • Must be CPA with 5 years in auditing experience with progressive responsibility.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance.
  • 7 years working in an accounting, audit and taxation role with at least 4 years management experience.
  • Proficiency in financial software and ERP systems, and experience leading an accounting system conversion and leading resulting change management.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of finance, accounting, treasury, ASPE, corporate tax and consumer tax.
  • Proven management and leadership skills, ability to effectively plan, coordinate, and manage staff, including prioritizing and scheduling work assignments, provide guidance and feedback in a constructive manner.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Detail-oriented, with a high level of accuracy and integrity.
  • Advanced level of Excel.
