POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Globe and Mail is seeking an experienced DevOps Engineer to join our team in managing and evolving cloud and on-premises infrastructure. This role is critical in ensuring the scalability, reliability, and security of our applications, including online subscriptions, third-party integrations, and internal systems.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Contribute to the design, implementation, and evolution of our cloud environment, while managing on-premises resources during migration to ensure a smooth transition
- Support the migration of services to AWS and drive the adoption of a cloud-first strategy to enhance scalability and modernize our infrastructure
- Drive the optimization of AWS services, including Amazon EC2, S3, ECS, Elastic Load Balancing (ELB), CloudFront, and Amazon CloudWatch, with a strong emphasis on enhancing performance and maximizing cost efficiency
- Design, develop, and enhance CI/CD pipelines using GitLab, GitHub, and AWS CodePipeline to streamline development workflows and ensure efficient, reliable deployments
- Manage environments, troubleshoot production issues, and resolve incidents with development and QA teams
- Maintain clear, user-friendly documentation of infrastructure, systems, and processes to support knowledge sharing and onboarding
- Implement and maintain comprehensive monitoring, alerting, and automation practices using industry-standard tools to proactively identify issues and enhance system reliability
- Automate infrastructure provisioning, configuration, and application deployment through infrastructure-as-code using tools like Ansible, Terraform, and CloudFormation, ensuring efficient, reliable, and scalable operations
- Enhance security by hardening servers and services, ensuring compliance with data protection standards
- Provide rotational after-hours support as part of the DevOps team
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience
- 6+ years of hands-on experience in DevOps, with a deep focus on cloud infrastructure management, specifically in AWS environments
- Expertise in AWS services, including proven experience with migrations, optimizations, and cost management strategies to drive efficiency and scalability
- Proficient in Bash and Python for automating tasks, streamlining workflows, and developing custom scripts
- Extensive experience with configuration management and infrastructure-as-code tools such as Ansible, Terraform, and AWS CloudFormation, enabling reliable and scalable cloud deployments
- Solid experience with CI/CD tools like GitLab, GitHub, and AWS CodePipeline to enhance development pipelines and accelerate deployment cycles
- Hands-on experience with monitoring and alerting tools like New Relic, Nagios, and Amazon CloudWatch to ensure high availability and system reliability
- Strong knowledge of Agile methodologies, with demonstrated success in collaborating within cross-functional teams to deliver results
- Excellent communication skills with a proactive, problem-solving mindset, capable of driving initiatives that deliver innovative solutions
- Proven ability to contribute to initiatives that foster innovation and drive impactful change in a fast-paced, evolving environment
