Structural Engineer - Buildings

We are seeking a Structural Engineer to work in our Buildings department to join our team of dedicated engineers, technicians, and support staff, delivering high quality engineering services for various Buildings related projects. The Structural Engineer will work on a variety of project types such as new building designs, building renovations and additions, structural assessments, design of structural repairs, and municipal structures. Projects may involve commercial, institutional, industrial, residential, or municipal buildings and various materials such as concrete, steel, wood, and masonry.
The Structural Engineer will be situated within our Buildings department, reporting to a Group Leader or the Buildings department Manager. The position will involve working in the office for a minimum of 3 days per week and the candidate could be situated in our Collingwood, Barrie, Orillia, or Bracebridge office, depending on the candidate’s preference.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Prepare structural calculations, model structures using design software, design new structures and analyze existing structures for a variety of project sizes and types
- Oversee the production of design drawings and contract documents for structural engineering projects
- Provide construction phase services for structural projects such as construction review, shop drawing review, and respond to inquiries from the contractor, design team, or other stakeholders
- Visit project sites to review or evaluate structures and collect information for the advancement of structural engineering projects
- Prepare written reports detailing observations and recommendations
- Prepare fee proposals for potential new projects, prepare proposals in response to requests for proposals, assist other departments with requests for proposals for projects involving structural engineering elements
- Serve as the project manager for structural engineering projects taking responsibility for setting and monitoring budgets and schedules, providing the main point of contact for the client, assigning and coordinating project staff, maintaining efficient and effective communication with the client and engineering team, reviewing the project accounting and direct accounting staff regarding invoicing
- Provide structural engineering design and construction phase support for projects led by other departments
- Attend regularly scheduled buildings department team meetings
- Assist with business development activities, maintain and expand our client base and develop client relationships
- Communicate with clients, architects, building officials, municipal and provincial approval agencies
- Distribute work to younger staff and support staff, mentor younger staff and provide technical support and guidance
- Conduct quality control reviews on structural engineering work completed by others
Key Position Requirements:
- P.Eng. in the Province of Ontario
- Minimum of 5 to 10 years of structural engineering experience
- Strong working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code (Part 4 and Part 9)
- Proficiency in the design of municipal, institutional, commercial, industrial and residential structures using wood, timber, steel, concrete and masonry
- Experience working on a variety of large and small project sizes
- Computer literate with knowledge of structural analysis and design software
- Excellent communication, organizational and time management skills
- Experience with business development is an asset
- Ability to manage multiple projects and work under minimal supervision
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
