Executive of Advocacy
Sheridan Student Union Inc. represents all fee-paying students at Sheridan College. General Responsibilities
All Roles
As a member of the SSU Executive Team, you will be an advocate on behalf of the entire Sheridan Community across all campuses, demographics, and programs. Your role is to be a top student leader, representing the interests of the students through informed feedback and observation. As the Executive team member of a specific area, you will be working under the SSU Director, Student Executive Team to create opportunities, initiatives, and further the organizational goals and priorities related to your specific position. These initiatives and opportunities will be cross-campus and will require collaboration and coordination with the other Executive members to ensure you are serving the entire Sheridan community.
Advocacy
Your primary role will be to represent the marginalized communities within Sheridan and provide insight into accessibility challenges that students may be facing. This includes, but is not limited to, the 2SLGBTQIA+, Black, Indigenous, and equity-seeking communities. Your advocacy work will extend beyond Sheridan to include college, municipal, and governmental stakeholders. You will also influence and assist in writing our organizational Advocacy Policies.
Qualifications
A successful candidate will have:
- Excellent verbal, and written communication skills;
- Confidence in public speaking to groups of students and while hosting events;
- An ability to conduct themselves in a professional manner;
- A flexible schedule to be able to work a variety of hours during regular business hours (between 8am and 6pm);
- A positive and respectful attitude;
- A strong, creative mind to create new and innovative campus initiatives;
- Familiarity and aptitude with popular social media platforms;
- A self-motivated work-ethic with the ability to work independently and in a team environment; and
- The ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with honesty and integrity
Specific Duties Include
All Roles
- Attend staff meetings, planning committees, and collaborate with the college, as required;
- Create monthly reports and recaps of projects and initiatives to be presented to the SSU Board of Directors;
- Create initiatives to support the SSU organizational goals and priorities, while raising awareness and providing support for services and issues that students encounter;
- Assist other Executives with their initiatives and projects to ensure all campuses are being considered and represented equitably;
- Represent your respective campus, as needed, while recognizing the Director, Student Executive Team as the primary spokesperson of Sheridan Student Union Inc.;
- Collect feedback and analyze student trends to provide guidance for the organization’s goals and priorities;
- Hold the responsibility of being a signing officer for the corporation, as needed;
- Help develop, review and maintain a yearly budget for the Executive Team;
- Attend retreats, events, and conferences as authorized by the Director, Student Executive Team;
- Other duties as assigned by the Director, Student Executive Team
Advocacy
- Advocate for the fair treatment of all Sheridan students academically, personally, and professionally;
- Coordinate student outreach to support students and guide them to the most appropriate service for the issues they may be facing;
- Determine gaps in support and resources for students from all communities from an SSU and college perspective;
- Create community-building initiatives to connect those seeking others within a particular community;
- Connect with external organizations to advocate on behalf of specific communities, or the entire student body;
- Reach out to Sheridan’s diverse communities to receive feedback, direction, and guidance on how to set organizational advocacy goals; and
- Work with the Director, Student Executive Team to maintain, update, and expand the SSU Advocacy Policies to reflect our goals and priorities for all Sheridan Students
