Position Summary:

Reporting to the Plant Manager, the Plant Superintendent is responsible for the daily operation of the salami manufacturing process, ensuring efficiency, cost control, and compliance with safety and quality standards. This role drives continuous improvement, manages labor and resources, and leads cross-functional teams to optimize production performance while maintaining a focus on operational excellence and employee engagement.

 

Key Accountabilities:

 

Safety & Compliance

  • Perform daily safety walks & observations to ensure compliance with facility safety standards.
  • Drive department DDS meeting excellence, ensuring all safety and operational concerns are addressed.
  • Maintain overall facility safety, including legal compliance.

 

Operations & Process Management

  • Oversee all salami manufacturing, curing, packing, slicing, and shipping functions, processes, and equipment, ensuring smooth operations.
  • Review and manage yields across multiple areas, driving improvements in efficiency.
  • Adhere to food safety & quality standards to ensure products are made in the highest quality possible.
  • Ensure proper sanitation procedures and participate in periodic audit.

 

Labor & Cost Management

  • Manage labor lineup, attendance, and efficiencies on a daily basis.
  • Balance labor distribution across the facility to achieve cost-effective operations.
  • Build skill/capability to ensure cohesive operation for staff during vacations and absences.
  • Monitor day-to-day costs, ensuring adherence to budgets with a basic understanding of accounting mechanics and G/L accounts.

 

Leadership & Employee Engagement

  • Coach, guide, and mentor staff to develop high-performing teams.
  • Communicate news effectively and act on employee feedback.
  • Resolve disputes that may involve union stewards.
  • Conduct daily department walks to verify adherence to safety/quality/housekeeping standards.

 

Project Management & Reporting

  • Drive change across multiple departments by running plant DDS meetings and tracking open issues.
  • Lead short- to medium-term projects, ensuring successful implementation and closure.
  • Deliver presentations to internal and external stakeholders.

 

Continuous Improvement & Change Management

  • Set and drive improvement targets across the facility.
  • Assist and support monthly Continuous Improvement (CI) meetings across five dimensions.
  • Utilize CI tools and methodologies to drive operational enhancements.
  • Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) initiatives to identify and resolve issues.
  • Coordinate the testing and implementation of New Product Introduction (NPI) processes.

 

Qualifications & Experience:

  • 5-10 of experience in an operations management role within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Strong understanding of change management tools and methodologies.
  • Experience in labor management, cost control, equipment upkeep, and process optimization.
  • Excellent leadership, coaching, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments to drive improvements.
  • Engineering degree – Industrial/Mechanical/Chemical engineering preferable
