Assistant Grower - Glen Williams

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Assistant Grower will be responsible for overseeing the growing, upkeep and standards of excellence for their assigned section of the farm.   

As a leader in the Nursery, you are expected to lead by example while working safely and striving to promote the best interest of Sheridan Nurseries in all aspects.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Supervise junior grower and crews to ensure tasks are completed on time with high quality standards in a safe and efficient manner
• Maintain accurate inventory through regular counts and assessment of crop ready dates
• Work with head grower to plan, prioritize and schedule
  • crop treatments – irrigation, pruning, spacing, winterizing etc.
  • crop inputs - fertilizer, herbicide etc.
• Work with the Plant health team to monitor and treat pests and disease; assist with pesticide/herbicide/biological control applications as required.
• Liaise with sales team on specific crop readiness and availability questions related to plants in your section
• Help research and trial new crops and growing techniques to improve quality and readiness
• Continue to actively learn growing principals and techniques, while sharing with fellow growing staff at Sheridan Nurseries
• Resolve work-related problems and prepare and submit progress and other reports.
• Able to join other work crews as priorities require at the direction of Management.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT:

• This role will require the flexibility to work a variety of shifts including day, evening, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.
• The job requires extended periods of walking and standing, as well as being able to lift 50lb and work in various weather conditions and environments.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must have completed high school and be legally eligible to work in Canada.
• Effective communication, organization, and leadership skills.
• Ability to problem solve and make decisions with an attention to detail.
• Resourceful and works well independently while supervising a crew.
• Ability to adapt and prioritize multiple tasks and situations with effective time management skills.
• Experience with MS Office Suite programs, including Access and Excel.
• You are punctual and dependable, and highly value honesty, integrity, and authenticity.
• Must possess or be willing to obtain Grower Pesticide Safety Certificate.
• Must possess a valid G license.
