Assistant Grower - Tropical

Permanent, Full Time

Glen Williams Ontario

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

Tropical Grower will be responsible for overseeing the upkeep and standards of excellence for the Tropical Facility and all plant material contained within the Facility.  

 

As a leader in the Nursery, you are expected to lead by example while working safely and striving to promote the best interest of Sheridan Nurseries in all aspects.

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for all growing tasks including pruning, plant maintenance, spacing, fertilizing, irrigation, and execution of IPM program
  • Accountable for the development and execution of an IPM program in collaboration with the Plant Health team
  • Responsible for the application of pesticides, chemicals, and biologicals as required to maintain crop health
  • Accountable for growing yield (scrap) and inventory accuracy and working with suppliers to seek credit when incoming plants do not meet quality standards
  • Coordinate the receiving of plants from internal and external suppliers.  Verify counts and create a receiving report, update inventory accordingly
  • Collaborate with the category management team, shipping and traffic teams to ensure orders are processed and delivered as requested
  • Coordinate the assembly and shipping of orders (including ecommerce orders) by collecting plants, building racks and maintaining inventory of shipping supplies
  • Maintaining accurate inventory through regular counts and assessment of crop ready dates
  • Coordinate, assign, and supervise the activities and work of team members
  • Track and record performance metrics to ensure adherence to standards (KPIs)
  • Promote a safe and healthy working environment.
  • Able to join other work crews as priorities require at the direction of Management
  • Other duties as assigned

 

WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT:

  • This role will require flexibility to work a variety of shifts including day, evening, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.
  • The job requires extended periods of walking and standing, as well as being able to lift 50lb and work in various weather conditions and environments

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Growing within a greenhouse environment
  • Experience Growing tropical plants is a definite asset
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain Grower Pesticide Safety Certificate
  • High standard of professionalism with excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Proficient (intermediate level or above) in the MS Office Suite programs, including Excel, Access and Word.
  • Resourceful and self-directed with the ability to work collaboratively with others to achieve goals.
  • Effective communication, organization, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to problem solve and make decisions with an attention to detail.
  • Resourceful and works well independently while supervising a crew.
  • Ability to adapt and prioritize multiple tasks and situations with effective time management skills.
  • You are punctual and dependable, and highly value honesty, integrity, and authenticity.
  • Greenhouse experience preferred.
  • Experience working with SBI, Phoenix and other ERP systems is an asset
  • Must have completed high school and be legally eligible to work in Canada
