Job Title: Director of Development
Reports To: Executive Vice President, Development
Department: VMC
Position Summary
The Director of Development will be a key member of the VMC team at SmartCentres and will work closely with internal and external consultants to advance approvals across the VMC portfolio. The successful candidate will be managing all aspects of approval process for residential, mixed-use projects, and commercial projects, motivated by thoughtful design and long-term ownership.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and responsible for multiple high-rise projects throughout the approval process —including planning approvals, design development, and liaison during construction —by working with multi-disciplined consultant teams and various government authorities
- Maintain appropriate records of architectural, landscape, and engineering plans, as well as approvals, permits and agreements for each project
- Prepare and maintain project schedules, meeting minutes, budgets, cost tracking, and assist in other financial reporting
- Support various internal departments – Sales and Marketing, Construction, Accounting, Legal, and Finance as-needed and identify ways to optimize coordination between internal stakeholders
- Stay current on new industry technologies and trends and municipal standards
- Help build industry and market presence and awareness
Academic/Professional Requirements:
- Post-secondary degree in Urban Planning or Architecture.
Required Skills/Experience:
- 4+ years of relevant work experience within the real estate development industry and/or relevant practical experience
- A strong understanding of planning policies, regulations, and approvals processes in the Greater Toronto Area is desirable.
- Knowledge of Bluebeam Revu, Revit, and AutoCAD would be considered a benefit.
- Self-motivated, hardworking, detail-oriented, and analytical with a strong desire to learn and able to work in a fast-paced environment.
