As the premier destination attraction and largest science center in Northern Ontario, Science North boasts expansive and complex facilities with a wide variety of needs to support its operations including repairs, maintenance, upgrades, and planning for renewal projects. Science North and Dynamic Earth include multiple buildings across two different sites totaling over 250,000 square feet. We are currently recruiting for a technologist who will be responsible for day-to-day infrastructure requirements related to building and property maintenance with an additional focus on mechanical building systems and the planning and implementation of capital renewal projects.
Under the supervision of the Senior Manager of Facility Services, you will join the highly skilled Facility Services team which includes a variety of technical specialists and technicians. In this role, you will lead the planning, development and implementation of facility capital renewal projects and use your skills and experience to provide oversight and expertise of technical buildings systems including HVAC, fire systems and building automation systems among others, including hands-on work where required. In order to be successful, you will ideally be an engineering technician or technologist with a background and experience in mechanical, HVAC, and building control systems. As part of the team you will also support the coordination and oversight of maintenance and renewal projects such as renovations or upgrades to building systems. For these reasons, it will be important for you to be familiar with regulatory requirements, codes, and standards to ensure projects and work are completed safely and within high-quality standards. You will utilize your supervisory experience in the supervision of various contractors and consultants. Position highlights:
- Manage and direct technical aspects of major internal projects, including scope, schedule and costs
- Conduct/Coordinate general maintenance and oversight of building systems
- Troubleshoot issues and conduct or oversee emergency repairs
- Coordinate, manage, problem solve and communicate effectively with contractors and stakeholders
- Supervise contractors, engineers, architects and third-party specialists involved with major renewal projects
- Participate in the emergency response team and the on-call rotation
- Provide reports on issues surrounding quality, safety, and workmanship; identify safety requirements and ensure external contractors meet all safety obligations
- Operation of hand tools, and a wide variety of equipment, elevating work platforms and/or forklifts and general equipment associated with building and property maintenance or technical work
- Conduct research, obtain quotes, purchase equipment and supplies, and formulate a project estimate for an assortment of projects
- Analyzes technical requirements for renovations, construction or maintenance upgrades
- Mentor other technical staff to promote and encourage best practices and innovation
- Monitors quality standards and ensures adherence to project management standards all codes, regulations, standards and best practices in relation to physical installations
Qualifications:
- A post-secondary degree and/or diploma that lends to the position (i.e.: engineering technician or technologist) or a certified trade with relevant experience
- 3 to 5 years’ experience in a technical field (i.e.: related to building systems)
- Knowledge and experience with codes, standards, and regulations to ensure safety and quality remain paramount in all work and projects
- Demonstrated aptitude for problem-solving, planning, and communicating
- Demonstrated ability to work seamlessly with a large team of stakeholders and ensure customer service excellence
- A valid G driver's license in good standing with a 3-year clean driving abstract
- Willingness to acquire necessary training and certification to work at heights and operate a forklift (at Science North’s expense)
- Computer skills with proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Experience drafting in AutoCAD is considered an asset
- Knowledge and experience with a CMMS is considered an asset
