Technical Designer
The Technical Designer leads a team responsible for maintaining fit and best construction practices. The Technical Designer will focus on fit standard, fit consistency, and construction from initial concept through to commercialization and production for their assigned categories. The Technical Designer will be a partner to the Product development team.
The Technical Designer for Roots will be responsible for and be evaluated on the following:
- Collaborate on technical packages in PLM, focusing on product fit specifications, and fit consistency
- Work with the Director of Technical Design to establish and maintain size and fit consistency standards to ensure overall brand consistency and quality.
- Prepare and lead fit sessions with Design and Product Development, discuss fit history when presenting current fit and collaborate with PD for alternative construction options when necessary, that will not impact the integrity of the product.
- Resolve and communicate fit issues & corrections to the Vendor and Product Development team within the development and production timelines.
- Evaluate fit and quality through review of customer comments, competitive analysis, and along with the Director of Technical Design conduct fit symposiums
- Establish a digital pattern library for all core & repeat styles to ensure consistency with multiple production locations
- Communication with the Vendor and the Product Development team to ensure fit corrections are captured and implemented
- Collaborate with Product Development to minimize sampling and production challenges with the goal to deliver the best product
- Adhere to company’s product calendar, by solving fit issues in-order to meet the calendar deadlines
Top candidates for the Technical Designer role will have the following:
- 3-5 years’ experience in apparel fit, patterns, and construction
- Experience with a wide range of categories from Kids to Adults considered an asset
- Ability to communicate effectively with factories, written and verbal -- providing concise and focused information
- Strong organizational skills
- Strong time management skills - ability to adhere to calendar deadlines and manage workflow accordingly
- Ability to “think outside the box” to find creative solutions to challenges
- Ability to work both independently and cooperatively with a diverse group of people
- Team player - ability to negotiate and build consensus across multiple functions.
- Proficient PC skills (Microsoft Office), illustrator and PLM data management system experience
