Position Summary
Reporting to the Foremen and/or Supervisor, the Labourer / Flagperson will provide support for road construction, road maintenance and/or sign maintenance crews throughout the County, and comply with safe work practices, procedures and legislation always.
Core Accountabilities
- Perform general road maintenance duties as assigned to include, but not limited to:

- Shoveling ditches to improve drainage
- Steam cleaning culverts to remove ice buildup
- Shoveling and raking asphalt for road patches
- Placing and compacting gravel around culvert replacements
- Snow fence installation and or removal
- Brushing cleanup and chipping
- Wooden and steel sign post installation and removal
- Removal of debris, litter and roadkill from ditches and roadsides
- Perform general labour duties associated with maintenance of County assets and property:

- Maintaining vehicles through continuous cleaning and washing
- Grass and weed mowing and cutting
- Painting buildings indoors and out
- Litter cleanup and disposal
- Perform routine traffic control around County worksites as dictated by Alberta Traffic Control regulations:

- Accurately and competently use signage and hand signals to stop, direct and divert traffic around active work sites
- Retrieve traffic counters, and set-up and remove radar speed awareness signs
- Temporary sign and barricade set-up and removal
- Ensure efficient completion of daily work assignments
- Participate in and contribute to safety meetings and job hazard assessment reviews.
- Work in accordance with the requirements established by the RVC Health and Safety Program and the Alberta OHS Act, Regulation and Code.
- Take reasonable care to protect their health and safety and other persons at or in the vicinity of the worksite while they are working.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Position Requirements
Have reliable transportation to get to work and able to work 10-hour days (6:00 am – 4:30 pm) Monday – Friday throughout the summer.
- Physically able to perform demanding tasks including bending, shoveling, heavy lifting up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds), and operating equipment for extended periods of time.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, or work as part of a team.
- Always demonstrate and execute safe and skillful operation of equipment.
- Display courtesy, tact, a customer service attitude, and a desire to always represent Rocky View County in a professional manner.
- Foster positive relationships with internal and external customers.
- Ensure appropriate utilization of personal protective equipment required (e.g., CSA footwear).
- Must possess a valid class 5 Alberta driver’s license with minimal infractions and have access to reliable transportation (abstract pulled by the County during pre-employment process).
- Ability to work weekends and overtime, as required.
