Surgical Consultant/Licensed Practical Nurse
Role Overview
This is a hybrid role that integrates the responsibilities between a Surgical Consultant and a Licensed Practical Nurse. This role requires a deep understanding of both clinical care and surgical processes, along with strong communication and organizational skills. It’s a role that could be both challenging and rewarding, offering a chance to make a significant impact on patient care and surgical outcomes. The Surgical Consultant/LPN will work closely with the Plastics Surgeon to successfully fulfill all aspects related to Plastic/Aesthetic surgery.
Role Objectives
Surgical Consultant responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Preoperative Consultation: Conduct pre-operative assessments that involve physical examinations, garment measurements, ordering relevant testing – including but not limited to bloodwork, ultrasound, x-ray, MRI
- Surgical Planning: Collaborating with plastic surgeons to plan and strategize surgical interventions, confirming and preparing surgical quotations, taking payments, following up on laboratory testing.
- Patient Education: Providing patients with information about their upcoming procedures, including risks, benefits, and recovery expectations.
- Postoperative Follow-Up: Monitoring patients after surgery to track recovery and address any complications or concerns.
- Administration Tasks: Utilize Med Access and paper filing management systems to record and obtain patient information during consultation, initiate booking and take payment, meticulous management of patient records. Coordinate out of town patient consultations.
- Perform other duties as requested by management and supervisory team
Licensed Practical Nurse responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Patient Care: Assisting with routine in-clinic patient care, including taking vital signs, administering medications, and performing basic medical and cosmetic procedures, patient teaching, following follow up and discharge protocols.
- Assisting Surgeons: Supporting surgical teams during procedures by preparing the operating room and assisting with patient positioning and preparation, intra-operative assistance while adhering to strict aseptic and sterile technique, knowledge of surgical procedures such as wide local excisions, biopsies, suturing, and suture removals.
- Documentation: Utilizing Med Access to maintain accurate and timely patient records, including details about treatments, medications, and progress. Assist with billing and charting for plastic surgeons
- Patient Education: Educate and inform patients about selfcare, wound care, medication management and disease prevention, provide product education for patients for appropriate post-care.
- Familiarization with conditions such as skin laxity/texture, rhytids, hyper/hypomastia, rectus diastasis, PAH defect, dermatochalasis, skin cancer, lipomas, cysts, hypopigmentation/hyperpigmentation
- Medical Device Reprocessing: Adhering to reprocessing standards set by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia, completing all necessary training required and participating in internal and external audits as required
- Clinic Housekeeping: Responsible for sanitization, clean-up and maintaining cleanliness of treatment rooms, follow clinic procedures to ensure medical inventory is accurate and kept up to date, participate in in-house and out of house training as required, adherence to clinic protocols to ensure no medical or clerical errors are made, communicate effectively within the nursing team to ensure a cohesive team environment
- Perform other duties as requested by management and supervisory team
Hybrid Role Integration:
- Clinical Skills: Utilize LPN skills to provide direct patient care, while also applying surgical consultant expertise to manage and support surgical procedures.
- Coordination: Efficiently coordinate between the surgical team and patients, ensuring smooth transitions and continuity of care.
- Patient Education and Support: Leverage both roles to offer comprehensive patient education and emotional support throughout the surgical process. Provide suggestions for aftercare products to enhance healing outcomes.
- Administrative Duties: Handle tasks related to both patient care and surgical consulting, such as scheduling, record-keeping, and follow-up appointments.
Role Qualifications
- LPN diploma from an accredited institution
- Current registration within the BC licensing body
- Current CPR certification
- 3+ years of Practical Nursing experience
- 2+ years of private surgical experience (Preferred)
- Previous experience in the Dermatology sector (Mandatory)
- Previous experience using MedAccess (Mandatory)
- Experience with CRM tracking (Preferred)
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Proficiency with Microsoft (Especially: Outlook, Word, Excel, Power point, Teams)
- Ability to work both as a team and independently
- Flexible availability, willingness to work weekends and evenings
- Knowledge of relationship-building sales tactics (SPIN), objection handling, sales funnel
