Laser Optimization Specialist

We are looking for an individual who is excited about machinery and manufacturing, technically inclined, energetic, productive, and can handle multiple priorities in a timely fashion with a high level of accuracy. We are looking for an Optimization Specialist for our specialized automation equipment, and our CNC fabrication equipment. This state-of-the-art equipment includes laser cutters, automated storage and retrieval towers, punching machines, panel benders, and press brakes. The ideal candidate will collaborate with various areas within the organization to ensure that these machines are able to operate at their full potential with minimal downtime. 

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Ensure the machines are utilized to their full potential and operated at optimal levels
  • Become an expert on the machines’ features, functions, and capabilities
  • Ensure machine output metrics and up-time expectations are met
  • Develop and implement process and procedure improvements, related to machine operation, and upstream and downstream processes
  • Troubleshoot machine output issues related to productivity and quality 
  • Determine and implement autonomous maintenance tasks and processes
  • Determine best practices for programming, and investigate new features and capabilities of programming software to optimize machine output (speed and quality), nesting, and material usage
  • Identify opportunities for product design changes to optimize fabrication on a specific machine. 
  • Train design engineers on design for manufacturability, with respect to specific machines 
  • Purchase capital equipment, and implement design changes and machine improvements. 
  • Create documentation including work instructions, safe working procedures, best practices, and standards.  
  • Other assigned duties as required.     

The Ideal Candidate will have:

  • Successfully completed a Mechanical Engineering Technology Program, or Mechanical Engineering Degree
  • The ability to interpret machine schematics, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, electrical systems, engineering drawings.
  • Mechanically inclined with strong troubleshooting skills.
  • Lean Manufacturing or Continuous Improvement experience/education.  
  • The ability to work independently with minimal supervision.      

Assets:

  • Experience with PLC’s, HMI’s, and other machine controls
  • Ability to use 3D CAD software
  • Familiarity with Salvagnini or Trumpf equipment. 
  • Mechanical or electrical design experience 
  • The ability to use CAD/CAM software.
