Justice Systems Navigator

It is the mission of Tungasuvvingat Inuit (TI) to broadly provide Inuit-specific programs that contribute to the health and wellbeing of Inuit and to encourage and support similar programs for Inuit across the country. TI has over 30 years of highly successful experience in crafting the design, development, and delivery of a wide range of effective, client-centered services. By incorporating the principles of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ), TI continues to deliver quality programs and services that directly benefit our growing urban Inuit population.
Reporting to the Pisiksik Justice Department Manager and working closely with Inuuqatigiit’s Project Coordinator, the Justice System Navigator (JSN) is responsible for supporting Inuit in navigating the Canadian Justice System. This role ensures Inuit gain fair and equitable access to legal services, language translation/interpretation (Inuktitut-English/ French) and direct supports to successfully navigate the legal system. The JSN works towards reducing barriers for clients, increasing their cultural safety, and providing access to relevant justice services, while providing community support and referrals. The JSN functions as a central intake point of contact for Tungasuvvingat Inuit (TI), is accountable for the coordination of appointments, individualized supports, and maintenance of client case files and tracks statistics of service and any referrals made outside of TI.
Responsibilities:
- Provide a safe conduit between clients and the Canadian Justice System parties, to ensure agency interactions and interventions are done in a culturally sensitive and appropriate way;
- Provides immediate access to culturally relevant programs and services for Inuit involved with the Canadian Justice System including clients, families, community members, and key stakeholders;
- Develop, organize, facilitate and provide access and referrals to legal supports, legal aid, cultural supports such as linguistics, elders, and cultural programs and services.
- Determine the needs of clients and families through intake;
- In collaboration with the Project Coordinator, complete all required administrative duties of the role including (but not limited to) manage intake, coordinate data gathering, maintain accurate client files and completing timely case notes in the appropriate electronic systems and assisting in project reporting requirements;
- Advise and assist in culturally relevant program development, program management and continued expansion and delivery of the program;
- Assist in training events and workshops;
- Build and maintain good working relationships, forging partnerships through outreach, education and information exchange with external partners and organizations across Ottawa;
- Network and collaborate with Canadian Justice System partners, stakeholders and liaise with community service providers and educational institutions;
Qualifications
Knowledge of the 8 Guiding Principles of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuit culture, values and traditional practices or a willingness to learn. Detailed knowledge of how to navigate the Canadian Justice System; Familiarity with Urban Inuit legal issues and the Inuit socio-economic landscape. Strong working knowledge of community resources and TI programming. Knowledge of the legacy of, Inuit colonization, Residential Schools, Intergenerational traumas, Ontario’s Inuit history, the Ontario justice system and Social determinants of health/socio-economic issues/needs;
The ideal candidate excellent skills in interpersonal and communication, case and file management, stress and time management, relationship‐building, group and one‐on‐one interviews, organizational skills and resourcefulness. CPR, Crisis Intervention and Prevention, Suicide Intervention and Prevention skills and training, Mental Health First Aid, Food Handling and Preparation and other relevant certifications are valued assets.
Proficient use of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, video-conferencing platforms and electronic records management applications and a clear Vulnerable Sector Check with results acceptable to TI is required. Availability to work evenings and weekends is required. The ability to speak Inuktitut is preferred. Valid Driver’s license and own reliable vehicle is required.
Completion of diploma or degree in Criminology, Social Sciences, Social Work is required.
Three years experience dealing with similar clientele, the justice system and community partners is a definite asset.

Salary and Benefits
- Salary is $60,000 annually
