The Opportunity:
Postmedia Calgary (Calgary Herald and Calgary Sun) is seeking a full-time Managing Editor who will assist the Editor in leading the newsroom. Excellent leadership qualities and management experience in a daily newsroom are required, as are the abilities to succeed under deadline pressures and multi-task a myriad of duties related to content creation for digital, social and print platforms.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate solid news judgment, creative thinking, adaptability and a high degree of organizational/planning skills. Working remotely for the Calgary newsroom, the successful candidate will be expected to help drive results in a fast-paced multimedia news environment, leveraging quality content to help break news and provide in-depth coverage of issues that matter. This is a remote position, with occasional in-town meetings required.
What you’ll do:

Assist the Editor in overseeing the newsroom and daily production of content for all platforms, while working to meet and exceed performance goals

Work on new projects that grow audience and enhance content offerings in areas including digital, video, newsletters, social media, print and special products

Innovate new ideas to create engaging content for all platforms and oversee implementation of ideas

Work with the assignment editor to ensure there's compelling daily news content and an ongoing coaching, development program in place for journalists; undertake OpEd and production duties, as required

Work with the Editor to oversee operations, which includes supervison of some staff, running a number of news meetings, being part of an on-call weekend rotation and participating in a front-page approval process
Who you are (qualifications):

Experience at a daily news organization in a deadline-oriented environment

Fluency in digital, print and social platforms

Ability to make solid news calls quickly, with an understanding of legal and ethical issues

Ability to help lead a newsroom, as a journalist and manager with flexibility to dive into any task or situation that arises

A make-it-happen leader, who not only inspires staff but also ensures effective and excellent execution on breaking news, explanatory content and long-form journalism
