Heritage Planning Student

The Town has an opportunity available for the position of Heritage Planning Student. The main purpose of this position is to assist with the Town’s review and update of the Town’s Municipal Heritage Register by researching properties to determine their cultural heritage value or interest for pursing designation under the Ontario Heritage Act.

 

Job Duties:

  • Conducting historical research and evaluation of heritage properties on the Town’s Municipal Heritage Register to determine suitability for individual designation in accordance with prescribed criteria under Ontario Regulation 9/06.
  • Under the guidance of the Heritage Orangeville and/or external Heritage Planning Consultants, and the direction of the Manager of Planning, conducting site visits, gathering information and collecting images of heritage properties; Identifying heritage attributes of properties to be included in designation statements and by-laws.
  • Preparing draft heritage evaluation reports, designation reports, by-laws and statements of cultural heritage value.
  • Collaborating with staff, Heritage Orangeville and stakeholders, including property owners regarding research and property heritage information.
  • Assisting with administrative tasks associated with heritage property information records and designation materials, including circulations, notification, document preparation and distribution.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • Full-time enrollment in a post-secondary degree or diploma program related to museum studies, history, library and information science, public administration, planning with a heritage emphasis of study, or related field.
  • Excellent research abilities related to historical information gathering regarding cultural heritage matters
  • Knowledge of Ontario rules and regulations regarding cultural heritage identification, preservation, local history, heritage conservation and/or archival systems.
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills, with attention to detail to avoid errors and a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Previous experience in conducting research and analysis related to cultural heritage property identification and designation in Ontario is considered an asset
  • Excellent written, verbal, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Proficient in the use in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint)

 

Hourly Rate: $24.59 to $26.60 (2025 rate)

 

Please note: To be eligible for this job, students must be enrolled in full-time post-secondary education.
