Programmer – Recreation and Aquatics

Community Services Department

(Full-time position, 35 hours per week)

The Town has an opportunity available for the position of Programmer – Recreation and Aquatics. Under the guidance of the Supervisor, Recreation and Aquatics, this position is responsible for the administration and delivery of a wide range of aquatic programs and recreation programs that are progressive and responsive to community needs and form the foundation of an inclusive, active, health community.

 

Job Duties:

  • Assisting in the planning, development, implementation and organization of aquatic and recreation programs including researching for potential new programs and partnerships, under the direction of the Supervisor, Recreation and Aquatics; Planning, organizing and implementing material for advanced leadership, learn to swim programs, which includes development of core lesson plans for instructor use. 
  • Coordinating the delivery of aquatic programs including swimming lessons, drop-in programs, leadership courses, Swim to Survive, and other aquatic and recreation programs including fitness and health and lifestyle programs; Performing guarding and instructor duties and teach aquatic leadership courses as required. 
  • Providing customer service support in the areas of general inquiries, registrations, bookings and program schedules relating to aquatics and other recreation programs where applicable; Completing data entry of program information into recreation management software and updates as required.
  • Providing direction to part-time aquatic staff through on-deck supervision and overseeing programs and recreation part-time program staff and contract instructors; Assisting the Supervisor, Recreation and Aquatics in the recruitment process for the Recreation and Events Division.
  • Ensuring day-to-day facility operations procedures are completed such as water testing, logbook documentation, inspections and cleaning.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications: 

  • Post-secondary diploma in Recreation and Leisure Services or related discipline.
  • Two years experience in programming, planning and delivering aquatic and recreation programs in a parks and recreation setting (municipal experience preferred).
  • The following valid certifications: 
    • Current Standard First Aid CPR C
    • Current Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard (Pool option)
    • Current Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Swim Instructors
    • Current Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructors
    • Current Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Emergency First Aid Instructors
    • Lifesaving Aquatic Supervisor Certification
    • Current Lifesaving Society Examiners Status (Bronze Family)
    • Current Lifesaving Society Standard First Aid Examiner
    • Current Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard Examiner
    • Current Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructor Trainer – Swim
    • Current Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructor Trainer – Lifesaving 
  • HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development and QUEST 2 training, and Pool Operator’s certificate are considered assets.
  • Specialized courses in aquatic leadership, Lifesaving Sport Coach, SEE Auditor or other recreational program experience such as instructional experience in teaching aquatic fitness including CALA or Water Art certifications is considered an asset.
  • Excellent knowledge of aquatics and recreation programs including fitness and health & lifestyle programs; Effective written, verbal, customer service and inter-personal communication skills; Proficient computer skills including database programs.

 

Successful candidates will be required to complete a background check, including but not limited to a Vulnerable Sector Check, in accordance with the duties of this position.

 

Salary Range: $67,873.26 to $79,402.12, Band 8 on the Town’s 2024 Pay Grid (currently under review), plus a comprehensive benefits package
