Background:

Miller Waste Systems Inc. has been in operation since 1961. Miller is a leader in waste management and diversion, providing governments and industries with a wide range of services in the province of Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Manitoba. Miller has over 50 years’ experience in the waste management sector, and currently operates out of more than 30 locations. We are looking for a highly capable Senior System Administrator to join our team, based in Markham, ON. 

 

Summary:                         

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Senior System Administrator to join our IT team. This role involves managing and maintaining the company's IT infrastructure, ensuring stability, security, and efficiency. The ideal candidate will have strong problem-solving skills, the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving IT challenges. Additionally, this role will contribute to strategic IT projects and provide advanced technical support.

 

Responsibilities:

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • System Administration
    • Install, configure, and maintain operating systems, software, and hardware.
    • Monitor system performance and ensure reliability and availability of IT services.
    • Perform regular system backups and disaster recovery planning.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware and software issues.
    • Stay up-to-date with the latest industry trends and technologies.
  • Network Management
    • Monitor and enhance network performance and security to protect data and systems.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve network connectivity issues.
    • Maintain VM hosts and Storage arrays.
  • Security and Compliance
    • Implement and maintain security measures to safeguard IT systems and data from unauthorized access.
    • Administer IT security policies, including patch management and access controls.
    • Conduct system audits and ensure compliance with industry regulations (e.g., GDPR, ISO 27001).
  • Cloud and Virtualization
    • Manage cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and hybrid environments.
    • Configure and optimize virtualized environments to meet organizational needs.
  • IT Projects and Collaboration
    • Collaborate with IT team members to plan and implement IT projects.
    • Provide technical support and training to end-users as needed.
    • Participate in disaster recovery planning and testing.
  • Documentation and Process Improvement
    • Maintain detailed documentation of IT systems, processes, and procedures.
    • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance IT efficiency.
  • Monitoring and Reporting
    • Implement system monitoring tools to track performance, availability, and security.
    • Analyze logs and generate reports on system metrics and incidents.

 

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Proven experience as a Systems Administrator or similar role.
  • Strong knowledge of operating systems (Windows, Linux, macOS).
  • Experience with network administration and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with virtualization technologies (VMware, Hyper-V).
  • Knowledge of cloud computing platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) is a plus.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., CompTIA Network+, Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator) are a plus.

 

Flexibility is also required as this position occasionally requires travel, early starts, late finishes and on rare occasions weekend work.  This is an in-office role, but occasional remote work is acceptable when approved.
