Position Summary

The Engineering/Planning Assistant provides administrative and technical support for the Transportation, Environmental and Development Divisions of the Public Works and Engineering Department. This position assists with producing reports for Council, performs financial and project accounting, records management, and coordinating other special projects as needed. This position also undertakes detailed design drawings and mapping for new and replacement infrastrucutre projects, and assists with providing engineering guidance over transportation, environmental and development related projects.

Responsibilities

Department Support

  • Assists with the administration and compliance oversight of the municipality’s infrastructure and development review to meet all applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Assists the Public Works and Engineering Department as required, preparing documents, mapping, data management, and ensuring timely follow-up with inquiries, and providing excellence in customer service.

Project Administration

  • Works collaboratively with the Director, Public Works and Engineering, Transportation Manager, and the Manager of Planning and Development to support, administer and provide guidance over transportation, environmental and development related projects.
  • Helps ensure projects are completed in accordance with plans and specifications, are completed on time, within set budget limits, and follow the municipality’s Infrastructure Design Standards and proper safety procedures.
  • Recommends optimum engineering solutions based on knowledge of site conditions, methods and available materials, time factors and budget constraints.
  • Supports and performs numerous assignments on ArcGIS to assist with capital projects, management of assets and growth and development tracking.
  • Carries out traffic count surveys and field investigations of issues or ongoing capital projects as directed.
  • Assists in the research and preparation of various reports.

Community Outreach

  • Performs customer service and public relations duties by handling and responding to resident/public service delivery inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.

Other Responsibilities

  • Undertakes special projects and performs other duties as assigned, in accordance with corporate objectives.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

  • High school diploma and currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from, a Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Planning, Planning Technology, Environmental Design, or Geographic Information Systems (GIS) related programs.

Experience

  • 2-6 months engineering co-op experience or progressive experience in a municipal or similar role is an asset.

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Computer literacy using the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.), Auto CAD, ArcGIS
  • Ability to work with third-party contractors, consultants, regulated agency officials and staff at all levels.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering prints, drawings, and survey information.

Other Requirements

  • Minimum of a valid Ontario class G driver’s license in good standing.
  • Criminal Records Check.
  • Able to lift 22 kg.

Hours & Conditions of Work

Normal work hours are 37.5 per week, Monday to Friday. This position works primarily in the office, with some time spent out of the office in the field and at site-specific meetings.

This full-time contract will start May 5, 2025, and the end date is subject to the co-op term (4-month to 16-month opportunities available).

Compensation

Compensation for this position is currently $21.47 to $25.56 per hour.
