About the Role

As the Community Métis Educator for the Huron-Superior Regional Métis Community at the Métis Nation of Ontario, you will champion the educational rights and cultural integrity of Métis students in elementary, secondary, and post-secondary institutions within Region 4. Reporting to the Regional Manager, you will collaborate with educators, administrators, and community partners to ensure Métis students receive culturally relevant support and representation.

What you will be doing

 In carrying out the following duties, it is expected that the Community Métis Educator will:

  • Fully understand the significance and fundamental importance of MNO’s Statement of Prime Purpose (SPP) to all MNO’s work, and to the requirements of the position specifically
  • Uphold MNO’s Standards of Professional Conduct at all times
  • Adhere to Privacy Laws and respect confidential information at all times
  • Ensure that all activities are conducted in accordance with established Métis Nation of Ontario Policies and Procedures and Contribution Agreements (CA)
  • Work in collaboration within the Branch, other MNO branches, MNO leadership, MNO citizens, MNO contractors and consultants on related projects

Advocacy and Representation:

  • Serve as a liaison between the Métis government, Métis students, families, schools, and educational institutions to advocate for culturally responsive educational practices
  • Develop and implement culturally relevant programs and resources to support Métis students' academic success, cultural identity, and well-being
  • Address and combat misinformation about Métis history, culture, and identity within educational settings through advocacy and education initiatives
  • Develop and implement an annual workplan and calendar of educational and cultural events aligned with the Huron-Superior Regional Métis Community’s cultural priorities and objectives

Cultural Support and Guidance:

  • Provide guidance to educators and administrators on incorporating Métis perspectives and content into curriculum and school activities

Community Engagement:

  • Collaborate with Métis Community Councils, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and cultural organizations to enhance educational opportunities and support for Métis students
  • Organize and facilitate workshops, cultural events, and guest speaker presentations to promote Métis culture and history within educational institutions

Collaboration and Networking:

  • Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders including school boards, Indigenous education organizations, government agencies, and community partners to advance the educational rights of Métis students
  • Participate in relevant committees, working groups, and conferences to stay informed about best practices and initiatives in Indigenous education advocacy
  • Collaborating with the other MNO staff, including the Cultural Events Coordinator, Sault Ste. Marie Métis Heritage Centre Staff, etc. in planning events and activities

This position is based in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario with frequent travel required within the Algoma District and elsewhere in the province. The role involves a combination of office work, community outreach, and on-site event management.

Mandatory Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the Métis Nation of Ontario organization and programs
  • Knowledge and ability to network and liaise with other Indigenous programs and services
  • Experience in advocacy, community engagement, or education, particularly within Indigenous communities
  • Passionate about child and youth advocacy in an education setting within an Indigenous lens

  • Demonstrated ability to identify problems and situations and take appropriate action
  • Strong case management skills
  • Proficiency in keyboarding and computer programs (Outlook, Excel, Work and PowerPoint) and various databases
  • Experience with standard office equipment
  • Available to work flexible hours or weekends to coordinate with program requirements, Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment
  • Bilingualism is required for the Timmins location only

  • Knowledge of community and youth-driven initiatives
  • Demonstrated results-oriented skills and practices
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a high level of tact and discretion
  • Work effectively both independently as well as in a team environment
  • Well-developed administrative, analytical and organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills which will be essential to facilitate key meetings
  • Willingness and ability to travel which may require extended periods away from the employee’s place of residence.
