The Opportunity

McElhanney Ltd. is seeking a Junior Civil Engineering Technologist to join our team in Edmonton, AB. This role is ideal for someone looking to grow their highway construction survey and materials engineering experience by working on both field and laboratory testing projects, and potentially assist other divisions including Rural / Urban Transportation and Municipal. This position will work closely with our Civil Engineering teams to deliver construction quality control and quality assurance services.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Field completion of surveys in support of highway construction projects including topographic surveys, layout of alignments, grades and features; measurement of earthwork quantities.
  • Expand upon, or develop, processing and calculating skills to gain a broader knowledge of survey operations. Experience with TBC and Civil 3D is an asset, and opportunities to learn as well.
  • Working as a materials testing technician including earthworks, aggregate, concrete and asphalt.
  • Projects offer the opportunity to work alongside McElhanney Site Inspectors and Engineers on site as part of the Consultant Engineers team, offering the chance to learn construction management while providing project surveying and material testing services.
  • Timely preparation of inspection and investigative reports.
  • Coordinate with other team members to ensure schedules, budgets and quality standards are achieved.
  • Liaise with contractor and affected stakeholders.
  • Assist with other technical tasks including drafting and design.

What You’ll Bring

  • Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology from an accredited post-secondary institution with 2-5 years of related work experience. Applicants not having a diploma will be considered depending on prior relevant experience.
  • Competence in the fundamentals and use of GPS survey equipment is a necessity
  • 1-2 years of prior experience with construction survey will be an asset.
  • Materials testing experience (earthworks/aggregate/asphalt/concrete) is an asset
  • Construction inspection experience is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Trimble Business Center (TBC) and Civil 3D is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Alberta Transportation (AT), Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) testing methods is beneficial (not essential).
  • Physical ability to lift heavy equipment, willing to work in various environmental conditions with varied terrain, able to work in wildlife populated areas and willing to work in remote areas, when needed.

What Can We Offer You?

The salary range for this position is $63,000 - $85,000 per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
