The Opportunity: 

McElhanney offers opportunities for an experienced Geotechnical Engineer to enhance our technical depth and build our team across our Geotechnical division on Vancouver Island. As an experienced Geotechnical Engineer, you will act as an influential leader motivating and working with a high performing team of technical professionals while providing technical input and design on a wide variety of geotechnical projects across McElhanney. Our client base is diverse – we need technical leaders who can deliver quality professional work-product in a timely manner.  A demonstrated depth of past technical work is expected commensurate with your level of experience.  

As an experienced Geotechnical Engineer, you will have at least six years of professional experience, while being a strong team player with high productivity and excellent attention to detail. Aside from your technical skills, you’ll also have the opportunity to leverage your established contacts and local experience to further build out our geotechnical services.   

The successful candidate may be based on Vancouver Island or in Langley, British Columbia, and can work either in an office or in a hybrid arrangement that combines remote and in-office work.

 

What You’ll Be Doing: 

As a Technical Expert:

  • Manage geotechnical investigations and assessments, complete with interpretation and documentation of results, on a wide variety of transportation, municipal, land development and resource related projects.
  • Provide geotechnical analysis of stability, stress, deformation, and foundation responses utilizing a suite of software platforms.
  • Provide oversight, risk management and technical inputs to geotechnical projects and deliverables.
  • Coordinate field projects, including prequalification, safety clearances and procurement of sub-contractors and sub-consultants as required.
  • Prepare concise geotechnical reports complete with pertinent recommendations.  
  • Carry out and supervise field inspection of construction works.  
  • Prepare fee estimates and proposals for geotechnical assignments.
  • Support other McElhanney divisions with geotechnical input.  (Structural, Marine Structural, Land Development, Survey, Geomatics, Civil and Environmental).

 

As a Project Lead:

  • An efficient and effective communicator. Comfortable working from the office, home and in remote work environments with the primary form of team and client communication via telephone and virtual video meetings.
  • Participate in business development (internal and external) and client management to help grow the business.
  • Ability to lead assigned projects independently and oversee the development of project schedules, technical deliverables and budgets efficiently and effectively. Must be able to provide senior oversight to other projects of varying complexities as required.
  • Oversight, guidance, direction and mentoring of junior technical staff, at a level consistent with your experience.  
  • Grow technical expertise with the mindset of supporting the existing and future McElhanney business and Geotechnical team.

 

Pay Range: $90K-$130K per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.   

 

What You’ll Bring: 

  •  
  • University degree in Geotechnical/Geological Engineering or Civil Engineering with a geotechnical emphasis.
  • A minimum of six years progressive experience in relevant geotechnical field, with experience in:  
  • Geotechnical engineering analysis, design, and consulting 
  • Seismic engineering and modeling are an asset  
  • Retaining wall designs and analysis 
  • Slope stability designs and analysis 
  • Settlement analysis and reviews 
  • Foundations designs, including shallow and deep foundation pile designs 
  • Marine and land base piling designs and analysis and design is an asset.
  • Slope hazard assessments and municipal, residential, commercial development projects, is an asset.
  • Computer modeling programs used to develop designs; knowledge of AutoCAD and geotechnical software (i.e., Open ground, Settle3, Plaxis or FLAC GeoStudio software including Seep/W, Geo5, Lpile or Allpile)  
  • Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual, 5th Edition 
  • BCBC Building Codes 2024 
  • National Building Codes 2020 
  • Registration as a P.Eng. in British Columbia, or be eligible for registration  
  • Strong technical, oral, and written communication skills  
  • Strong project management skills (Budgeting, project financials monitoring, etc.) and the ability to independently lead projects of varying complexities. 
  • Ability to work both independently and with a multidiscipline team in various locations and especially remote work environments.
