Business Leader, Bridges and Structures

The Opportunity:

We have a new opportunity for a Bridge and Structures Business Leader to join our team in Calgary. This role is ideal for someone who is looking to utilize their leadership and technical skills, while having the freedom to grow the division as they see fit while working collaboratively with McElhanney business leaders from disciplines as diverse as transportation planning and design, geomatics, hydrotechnical, geotechnical, construction supervision, alternative project delivery, municipal engineering, landscape architecture, environmental and more. The Bridge and Structures Business Leader based in Calgary will also operate alongside our established bridge and structural engineering practices across Alberta and British Columbia, sharing expertise and staffing as needed to thrive as Western Canada’s ACE consultant: Amazing our clients, Caring for our communities, and Empowering our people.

We are seeking an experienced Professional Engineer with excellent leadership abilities, solid technical skills, and a strong aptitude for business development focused on leading the pursuit and delivery of bridge and structural engineering projects, including the design, rehabilitation, and / or evaluation of municipal, highway, transit, and pedestrian bridge structures.

The successful candidate is a leader who possesses a versatile skill set encompassing people management and coaching, business acumen, and financial expertise, essential for navigating the complexities of our industry. Your adept communication and listening skills empower each member to contribute meaningfully, fostering collaboration and innovation. Through mentorship and feedback, you instill a culture of continuous learning, driving individual and team success. As a Business Leader, you demonstrate a keen understanding of market dynamics, identify and cultivate new business opportunities, manage client relationships, collaboratively work with other leaders across the branch and possess strategic insight to drive growth. Furthermore, you understand financial management and analysis necessary for making informed decisions and optimizing resource allocation to achieve sustainable success.

What You’ll Be Doing:

Directly reporting to the Business Leader, Transportation Engineering, you will: 

• Lead diverse projects: envision and manage technical, logistical, and financial aspects and oversee engineering design from proposal stage through to commissioning of the work
• Hire, retain, coach and mentor staff fostering a positive, and an engaged culture
• Facilitate continuous learning and professional development of team members
• Collaborate with branches across the region and company to support local projects
• Lead business development, workload balancing, staffing, equipment, safety, quality, and financial outcomes within the bridge and structures market
• Develop new business opportunities and establish strategic relationships with key clients, agencies, and partners
• Represent McElhanney to the external environment including clients, businesses, and professional associations to enhance McElhanney’s positive public profile.
• Serve as a senior technical leader for bridge and structural engineering across the company as part of our Technical Service Group program

Qualifications: 

• Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited university with strong technical skills and 15+ years of related technical experience.
• Registration in good standing as a Professional Engineer in Alberta or ability to obtain registration through existing inter-jurisdictional agreements

What Can We Offer You?

The salary range for this position is $125,000 - $175,000 per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications which is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
