McElhanney is seeking a Junior Outdoor Recreational Professional to join our team. While the role is all about the outdoors, up to 90% of your time will be spent on a computer synthesizing the results of your field work. To succeed in this role, you must be an excellent writer, a strategic thinker, and have a solid understanding of trail sustainability principles. Being a team player is critical, as you’ll work alongside subject matter experts to bring a wholistic picture of development to trails. This is a junior role, providing support to projects undertaken by the 6-person strong Trails division at McElhanney.

What You'll Be Doing
As a Junior Outdoor Recreational Professional, your role will include:
- Writing, editing, and formatting documents such as (up to 90% of your workload): Inventory and assessment reports, Trail master plans, Permit Applications, Presentations (including developing graphics), RFPs and procurement documents
- Trail inventory, assessment, design, and construction inspection/management, under the following conditions:
- Travel across Canada and internationally for up to 2 weeks at a time. Field work is rarely within day trip distance of office locations.
- Field work often occurs over extended durations, including weekends and holidays with 10+ hour work days.
- Design often includes bush-whacking through dense vegetation and other challenging conditions.
- Field work may involve hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding or OHV use.
While prior experience is not required, this role has a substantial mapping component that involves data collection, data editing, and producing virtual and .pdf maps. Comfort and experience working with mapping technology, databases, and computer logic forms a substantial component of skills required of a Junior Trail Technician. Beyond the basics of mapping, understanding the relevance of trail grades, widths, turn radii, other trail features, and terrain are key components of the knowledgebase in this role.
What You'll Bring
- Strong technical writing skills.
- Degree from an accredited university or technical school.
- Training or equivalent experience in planning, designing or constructing sustainable trails.
- Mapping, database, and/or other computer software experience.
Nice To Haves
- Knowledge of GIS, AutoCAD, and/or other design or mapping software.
- Experience preparing tender documents and construction management.
- Understanding of, or experience in, planning or community engagement activities.
The successful candidate must be willing to work from Canmore, Golden, Whistler or Terrace at a minimum of 4 days a month, for the remainder of the month they can be remotely located. Preference is given to applicants who can be in the Canmore office.
Note: This role requires travel for field work, across Canada and occasionally internationally. The selected candidate must be able to easily travel for up to 2 weeks at a time.
What Can We Offer You
The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $85,000 per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
