The Opportunity:
McElhanney offers an opportunity for an experienced Geotechnical Engineer to enhance our technical depth and build our leadership team across our Geotechnical division. As a Senior Geotechnical Engineer, you will act as an influential leader motivating a high performing team of technical professionals while providing technical review on geotechnical projects across McElhanney. Our client base is diverse – we need technical leaders who can deliver at the senior level, with a demonstrated depth of past technical work. This senior level role is ideal for a self-driven, superior communicator who enjoys a challenge and the satisfaction derived from being part of an established multidisciplinary team.

Salary Range: $110,000- $149,000 Per Annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
What You’ll Be Doing:
As a Technical Expert:
- Manage geotechnical investigations and studies, complete with interpretation and documentation of results, on a wide variety of transportation, municipal, land development and resource related projects
- Geotechnical analysis of stability, stress, deformation, and foundation response utilizing a suite of software platforms
- Experience in the assessment of liquefaction and design of mitigation measures would be an asset
- Provide senior oversight, risk management and technical review to geotechnical projects and deliverables
- Coordinate field projects, including prequalification, safety clearances and procurement of sub-contractors and sub-consultants as required
- Prepare concise geotechnical reports complete with pertinent recommendations
- Carry out and supervise field inspection of construction works
- Prepare fee estimates and proposals for geotechnical assignments in the office.
As a Leader:
- An efficient and effective communicator. Comfortable working from home and in remote work environments with the primary form of team and client communication via telephone and virtual video meetings
- Take ownership of and drive business development (internal and external) and client management
- Help project managers to balance geotechnical division workloads with capacity, evaluating geotechnical opportunities.
- Manage project schedules and budgets efficiently and effectively
- Oversight, guidance, direction and mentoring of junior technical staff
- Grow technical expertise with the mindset of supporting the existing and future McElhanney business and Geotechnical team
What You’ll Bring:
- University degree in Geotechnical/Geological Engineering or Civil Engineering with a geotechnical emphasis
- A minimum of 15 years’ progressive experience in relevant geotechnical field, with experience in:
- Geotechnical engineering analysis, design, and consulting
- Seismic engineering and modeling in a coastal setting are an asset
- Pile design and assessment both marine and land applications are an asset
- Slope hazard assessments and land development applications, is an asset
- Computer modeling programs used to develop designs; knowledge of AutoCAD and geotechnical software (i.e., RocScience, GeoStudio software)
- Candidates must possess or be eligible for Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registration in British Columbia. Additionally, registration as a P.Eng. in Alberta is considered an asset.
- Strong technical, oral, and written communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and with a multidiscipline team in various and especially remote work environments
