Every day, more than 1,200 people work with the YMCAs of Québec network, providing a variety of services that create positive change in people’s lives. 

A DAY AS A COMPANION

Reporting to the inclusion and diversity specialist, the companion will be responsible for one to three children in need of support (e.g., with or without a specific diagnosis, with autism spectrum disorder, with a physical disability, etc.). They will work with a clientele aged 5 to 12 to provide them with a meaningful and safe camp experience. They will plan and adapt appropriate activities according to the needs of the child or children they are responsible for. They will participate in establishing and maintaining a relationship of trust and positive relationships with children, parents/guardians, and other team members.

In this position, you will be responsible for:

  • Adapting camp games in collaboration with the group counsellor; Facilitating the inclusion of the children you are responsible for;
  • Developing and using different tools made available to you to assist your campers;
  • Accompanying your campers in the water during aquatic activities; 
  • Ensuring the safety, comfort, and well-being of your campers;
  • Communicating regularly with parents/guardians to develop and maintain a positive relationship with them and the children;
  • Participating in preparatory meetings and training required for camp including weekly camp meetings and phone calls.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a good command of French and English.
  • Be able to swim or be comfortable in a pool.
  • Have experience working with children with different needs or have completed studies in a related field (specialized education, psychoeducation, etc.).
  • Have experience working in a day camp (asset).

KEY SKILLS

  • Be able to support the growth of campers in activities;
  • Participate in teamwork and ensure a good work atmosphere;
  • Be responsible and adhere to YMCA ethical standards;
  • Take initiative and demonstrate leadership;
  • Guide, motivate and inspire campers.

FOR YOUR PROFESSIONAL GROWTH, THE YMCA DAY CAMPS OFFER:

  • A pleasant work environment at YMCA Saint-Roch.
  • An hourly wage of $ 18.50.
  • Fees for first aid, CPR and rescue training (if you’re not already certified), as training is a prerequisite for the position. Please note, however, that training time is unpaid.
  • Variable working hours: Monday to Friday, mornings and late afternoons – 35 to 40 hours a week as needed.
  • Meetings and training to guide and support you: May 4 (signature of contract) and evenings and weekends during the month of June

Duration of employment: From June 23 to August 22, 2025* * Some camps may end earlier.
