Position: Engineering Co-op  

Salary: Grade 4, Non Union ($23.07/hr 2024 rate)
Reports to: Division Leader – Engineering and Infrastructure
Work Term: May to August

 

Purpose of Position:

Reporting to the Division Leader – Engineering and Infrastructure, the Engineering Co-op student will gain knowledge and practical experience in the civil engineering career field.  The student will be responsible for assisting in surveying, preparing and reviewing technical documents and inspecting various municipal projects.

Qualifications:

  • Be a returning student at a recognized College or University program in Ontario with preference given to those enrolled in a Civil Engineering program
  • Experience using AutoCad and ESRI software
  • Working knowledge in the use of GPS technology and field surveying
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills with attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills in order to handle and transfer data accurately and in a timely manner
  • Experience in research, setting priorities and managing various concurrent projects
  • Able to work as a team player with all municipal department, staff, Council and the community while always maintaining and promoting a positive and professional work environment
  • Safety footwear is required
  • Must hold and maintain a valid Ontario driver’s license

Knowledge:

  • Engineering principles and practices
  • Design codes, manuals and guidelines
  • Surveying techniques for civil construction projects
  • AutoCad
  • Interactive web-based map service, GIS
  • Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint
  • Adobe Acrobat, Laserfiche

Major Responsibilities:

  • Assist in surveys, technical document preparation, inspection of various municipal projects
  • Provide support to Engineering Technologists in the field for development reviews, utility permits and/or municipal capital projects
  • Assist with updating documentation for the division such as development manual
  • Analyse and interpret data to provide information/reports as required
  • Research and compile data in the preparation of technical reports
  • Perform traffic counts and assist with traffic calming recommendations
  • Organize, input, and analyze gathered information into spreadsheets and/or AutoCAD drawings.
  • Assist with providing documentation for letters or public notices
  • Assist in the maintenance of department’s electronic filing system
  • Undertake other duties and responsibilities as may be required from time to time by the Division Leader – Engineering and Infrastructure and/or other Division Leaders in the department.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Decision Making and Judgement:

  • Work is performed under the general direction of the Division Leader – Engineering and Infrastructure with access to municipal policies, procedures, bylaws and regulations.

Physical Skill and Effort

  • Occasionally lifting of boxes and public meeting supplies, intermittent keyboarding, sitting for long periods of time, some walking and stairclimbing.

Interpersonal Skills:

Interpersonal skills to liaise with the public and fellow staff members in a professional, friendly and co-operative manner.

Internal:

  • Daily contact with Division Leader – Engineering and Infrastructure to ensure work responsibilities are met.
  • With other staff to ensure provision of timely information and services

External

  • Answer questions from the public, provide information and provide customer service

Working Conditions:

Environment

  • Primarily works in an office environment indoors

Control over Work Schedule

  • Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (35 hrs/wk)
