Civic Engagement - Communications Co-op Student
Position: Communication and Engagement Co-op
Salary: Grade 4, Non Union ($23.07/hr 2024 rate)
Reports to: Division Leader – Communication and Engagement
Work Term: May to September
Purpose of Position:
Reporting to the Division Leader – Communication and Engagement, this position will provide support to the Communication and Engagement Division of the Municipality of Lakeshore. The student will be exposed to aspects of implementing communications programs as well as activities regarding civic engagement, planning, media inquiries, public relations, corporate website and social media engagement, advertising, branding and marketing, internal communications, public survey methods and citizen consultation practices, civic engagement and emergency communications.
Qualifications:
- Be a returning student in a recognized College or University program in Ontario in a related field (e.g. Communications, Public Relations, Public Policy, Political Science, Graphic Design, or Marketing) and be legally entitled to work in Canada as a student
- Hold a valid driver’s license
- Well-developed oral, written communication skills with attention to detail
- Experience creating multimedia content for social media
- Experience with quantitative and qualitative survey methods and citizen engagement tools (e.g. surveys, open houses, community roundtables)
- Able to understand the sensitivities surrounding the use and dissemination of confidential information and communication
- Experience in research, setting priorities and managing various concurrent projects
- Able to work as a team player with all Lakeshore departments, staff, Council, and the community while always maintaining and promoting a positive and professional work environment
Knowledge:
- Microsoft Office Products (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Adobe Creative Suite
- Multimedia/video/creation and editing
- Social medial marketing
- Accessibility for Ontarians with Disability Act awareness is an asset
Major Responsibilities:
- Write, produce and edit a wide range of multimedia content, including photos, graphics, videos, and print/digital content.
- Assist in managing the content for the corporate website and social media accounts, ensuring adherence to visual identity, brand standards, corporate voice and tone as well as accessibility compliance.
- Assist with media relations (traditional and digital media) including monitoring issues that may impact the corporation, assisting in developing timely responses to media inquiries.
- Plan and organize civic engagement events in support of organizational priorities and initiatives.
- Other related duties or tasks as assigned.
Decision Making and Judgement:
- Work is performed under the general direction of the Division Leader – Communication and Engagement with access to municipal policies, procedures, bylaws and regulations.
Physical Skill and Effort
- Intermittent keyboarding, sitting for long periods of time, some walking and stairclimbing
Interpersonal Skills
Interpersonal skills to liaise with citizens and fellow staff members in a professional, friendly and co-operative manner.
Internal:
- With Division Leader – Communication and Engagement to ensure work responsibilities are met.
- With other staff to ensure provision of timely information and services.
External
- Answer questions from the public and provide information during events (both in-person and online).
Working Conditions:
Environment
- Primarily works indoors in an office environment
Control over Work Schedule
- Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
