Position:                    Planning Technician Coop Student

Salary:                       Grade 4, Non Union ($23.07/hr 2024 rate)

Reports to:                Division Leader – Community Planning

Purpose of Position:

The Planning Technician Coop Student is responsible for performing various activities associated with the support of planning activities, including conducting surveys, research, data analysis, and preparing documents.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Must be currently enrolled in a College or University in the field of Urban & Regional Planning or related field of study;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Familiarity with general land use planning principles
  • Knowledge of word processing, spread sheets, GIS, interpreting air photos and maps, and a familiarity with reading plans
  • An understanding of the core principles and considerations of urban design.
  • Knowledge of the planning and development processes in Ontario and the role of urban design.
  • Knowledge of computer software such as MS Office Suite. Ability to use SketchUp, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop, and hand-drawn skills would also be beneficial.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Assist with responding to daily enquiries regarding planning and development matters.
  • Review land use proposals for basic conformance with land use policies.
  • Update the Municipalities database system for tracking applications.
  • Record and track status of all planning related matters.
  • Develop and prepares mapping and illustrations.
  • Assist with record keeping for the Community Planning function.
  • Assist with special projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Decision Making and Judgement:

  • Work is performed under the general direction of the Division Leader – Community Planning and other department heads.
  • Works within established guidelines, policies, procedures, directives, bylaws and legislation. 

Physical Skill and Effort

  • prolonged sitting, prolonged standing, bending, keyboarding, stooping, climbing, lifting 20 lbs, driving

Interaction Level:

 

Internal: 

  • Daily contact with office staff and management
  • With co-workers and other staff members to ensure provisions of timely information and services.

External

  • Daily contact with provincial ministries, Conservation Authorities, Utilities, School Boards, lawyers, contractors, professionals

Working Conditions:

Control over Work Schedule

  • 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (35 hours per week).
