Custodian - Administration Building

Purpose 

To provide effective custodial duties at the Grey Administration Building and other County Buildings as assigned, including general interior and exterior maintenance, cleaning, inspection and security.

Responsibilities

General Building Maintenance

  • General cleaning including cleaning of floors, carpets, hallways and windows in common areas and offices, washing of stairwells walls and common areas.
  • Performing minor maintenance and repairs such as light bulb replacement, maintenance of emergency lighting, air makeup systems and other equipment, repairing leaky faucets, broken windows, clearing blocked drains.
  • General carpentry including drywall repairs, floor repairs, baseboard installation and installing shelving.
  • Minor building repairs and painting, furniture installation and relocation, removal of garbage and recycling material.
  • Assists in scheduling regular maintenance on building systems and implementing regular and preventive maintenance procedures
  • Ensuring doors are properly locked, assisting in maintaining general security, assisting on lock outs, and monitoring and assisting in cases of Fire Alarms.
  • Assisting with the investigation of complaints and rectifying same where possible. Exterior Maintenance of Building 
  • Operation of lawn maintenance equipment including tractor, lawnmower, snow blowers, hedge trimmers, sanders, etc. Minor maintenance of lawn equipment.
  • Snow removal of walkways, parking lots, entrances and exits and ensuring they are maintained in a safe condition for staff and the public.
  • General landscaping duties, including maintenance and/or cultivating of flower beds, trees and shrubs; watering, fertilizing of lawns areas and flower beds; cutting grass, snow removal and sanding as required

Other Duties

  • Assisting in organization and implementation of set up for all meeting rooms with Building Superintendent and building staff.
  • Maintenance of office equipment and furniture.
  • Maintaining all office inventory supplies.
  • Assist the general public and county employees as required and remains available and able to respond to requests for assistance.
  • Monthly audit of fire and emergency systems, including assisting Building Superintendent in fire drills.
  • Performing all inspections, checks and tests as designated and required by the fire log books.
  • Maintains skill at a high level by taking advantage of training and development opportunities, through courses, seminars and selected reading
  • Performs such other associated duties and tasks that may be assigned from time to time.

Working Conditions

Forty (40) hours per week, work is subject to interruptions, overtime and varied hours, exposures to restricted spaces and heights, chemicals and inclement weather. Overtime may be required to maintain safe access to building such as clearing snow from sidewalks and entrances after normal working hours or on weekends. Use of a personal vehicle to travel between buildings, when more than one building is part of the assigned portfolio, is required.

Knowledge and Skill

  • Preferably incumbent will have completion of Secondary School Diploma and be able to work with and understand instructions and methods regarding mechanics and basic equipment maintenance used throughout the building(s), Health and Safety training including WHMIS.
  • Knowledge of modern janitorial methods is a prerequisite and the ability to effect minor maintenance repairs.
  • Ability to use email, Microsoft word and outlook.
  • Proven ability to exercise tact and diplomacy is required. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, is also a requirement and competence in custodial duties.
  • Valid Drivers license

Impact of Error

Poor custodial practices create an unsafe working environment and an unhygienic living environment. Failure to perform required checks and maintenance of equipment will result in violation of legislation such as the Fire Code and potential unsafe environment for our residents
