Payroll Team Lead

Under the direction of the Payroll Supervisor, the Payroll Team Lead will be responsible for the delivery of full-cycle payroll services for all of the Fort McKay Group of Companies employees. The Payroll Team Lead will oversee a team of payroll specialists and ensure compliance with Employment Standards Legislation, Collective Bargaining Agreements, and related payroll and tax regulations. This is a safety-sensitive position that requires completion of pre-employment/pre-access testing.
Key Focuses:
- Manage full-cycle payroll ensuring pay for employees is accurate and on time.
- Analyze and correct payroll errors and issues to ensure the integrity of the payroll system.
- Provide weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, and annual payroll deductions, remittance reports and union reporting.
- Accountable for accuracy and the timeliness of payroll remittances for garnishments and union benefits.
- Provide leadership to the payroll team and oversee the day-to-day operations and effectiveness of the payroll staff.
- Handle staff inquiries related to payroll in a professional and timely manner.
- Initiate and develop revisions to payroll procedures and processes to ensure best practices.
- Implement new procedures as well as maintaining company standards and ensuring legislative compliance and best practices.
- Analyze, recommend, and develop continuous improvement processes to increase efficiency.
- Maintain awareness of current payroll legislation and coordinate system parameter changes.
- Support the Payroll Supervisor when performing the annual compilation and reconciliation of employer costs for payroll and benefits, the processing of T4s, and related year end reporting.
- Understanding of provincial and federal privacy laws, as it pertains to collection of personal information; maintain confidentiality of all payroll information.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
- Completion of post-secondary education in Accounting or Business is preferable.
- Payroll Compliance Professional (PCP) certification is required.
- Payroll Leadership Professional (PLP) certification or willing to work towards the certification is considered an asset.
- At least 3-5 years of experience in payroll processing, accounting, or a related discipline.
- Experience in a unionized payroll environment is preferable.
- Strong knowledge of MS Office, specifically Excel, and Outlook is required.
- Experience in Ceridian Dayforce HCM is considered an asset.
- A valid Class 5 License (or equivalent) is required, along with a satisfactory 3-year Drivers Abstract.
- Strong customer service skills, with an ability to support internal and external clients.
- Strong attention to detail with an exceptional level of accuracy.
- Considerable knowledge of Canada Revenue Agency’s payroll taxation legislation.
- Strong knowledge of Alberta Employment Standards.
- Strong knowledge of a unionized work force and CBA’s.
- Strong aptitude for ERP and Payroll systems.
- Familiarity with Service Canada processes and procedures.
This is a full time position located in Fort McMurray, AB.
Work schedule is Monday to Friday, 8 hours per day.
