Position Title: Director, Large Case Underwriting
Reports To: VP, Chief Underwriter & Claims
Department:
Life Underwriting
Term: Permanent Full-Time


Work Arrangements: This is a hybrid role. You will work in our office in Waterloo, ON a minimum of two (2) assigned, consecutive days every other week, plus a fifth (5th) assigned day per month. You are welcome to work from the office more than the minimum requirement and there may be some roles that are required to work in our office more than the minimum requirement.

 

The Opportunity: Equitable is growing! We are looking for a Director, Large Case Underwriting to join our Life Underwriting leadership team!

 

In this role, you will lead a team of highly skilled underwriters to provide an exceptional Large Case experience for our clients and partners.

What you will be doing:

  • Lead the Individual Large Case Underwriting Team with a focus on client experience, profitable growth, and team retention. Specific accountabilities of this position include:
    • Deliver an exceptional Large Case experience
      • Recruiting and developing a motivated team focused on technical and relationship skill development and critical thinking to compete in the Large Case market
      • Create and develop a customized white glove experience for large cases in individual insurance. 
      • Collaborating with Distribution, Pricing, Operations to deliver a large case program with customized underwriting solutions
      • Build relationships with Advisor and Distribution partners to proactively manage client large case experience
      • Regular presentations and consultations with Large Case advisor and MGA market
      • Nurture already exceptional relationships with Reinsurance partners to deliver top-notch large case experience
      • Key leader in the underwriting team, promoting a positive environment in the underwriting department
      • Accountable for performance management, salary adjustments and communications for direct report underwriting team members
      • The provision of timely positive and constructive feedback to team members and implementation of the annual Review and Scorecard process
    • Provide quality results for all Individual clients and partners (advisors, policyholders, MGAs, distribution)
      • Maximize service, both in relationship building with external partners, in addition to ensuring team adheres to time service expectations
      • Create and facilitate team goal setting, in conjunction with the VP of underwriting
      • Establish and maintain strong level of partnership and collaboration with Distribution partners, including Wholesalers and RVP’s
      • Manage pre-sale underwriting activities, such as preliminary opinions on complex insurance structures
      • Aligning Large Case practices with the underwriting risk philosophy of Equitable
      • Regular presenter to Advisors, internal Distribution, and Equitable teams to share knowledge, build relationship
      • Work closely with Legal & Compliance, and internal Equitable Underwriting Risk Management team to ensure that Large Case practices align with the underwriting philosophy of Equitable

 

 

What you will bring:

  • 10+ years as professional underwriter, exceptional technical and relationship management skills
  • College or University degree or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of individual products and underwriting policies, procedures, workflow and admin systems
  • Proven skills in People Management and Development
  • Cross functional understanding
  • Appreciation of the complexities of the Individual marketplace and competition
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving ability
  • Excellent written, verbal and product knowledge skills, ability to impart knowledge to others work in a team environment
  • Proactive and service orientated, results focused with a sense of urgency
  • Understanding our clients, and the importance of communication, protects against the loss of advisor’s confidence
  • Project work as required
  • Development, Performance reviews FLMI / FALU designation or currently working towards
  • Consistent accountability of quality and quantity of work
