About the Role:
Global BC is looking for a permanent, full-time Visual Journalist to join the #1 newsroom in Western Canada. Reporting to the Assistant News Director, with daily accountability to the National Manager, Brand and Design, your role and responsibilities will continue to define the look of News content on all platforms. You have a creative flair with a strong visual sense that will have a significant impact as an integral member of an award-winning News Design Team. You are passionate about news, motion design and 3D animation, and can demonstrate your talents and exceptional graphic skills as part of your portfolio. As a Visual Journalist, you are an experienced storyteller and can translate complicated data and information into compelling graphics and animation. This is a Group 4 position under the current Collective Agreement.

The following is an outline of some but not all the primary functions and responsibilities for this position:
- As an editorial leader, you will help originate, design, and develop ideas for graphic treatments of news content and special coverage for all platforms.
- As a designer, you will push the boundaries of online and broadcast storytelling through databases, maps, and visualizations.
- Research stories and curate content to give depth and meaning to informational graphics and data driven displays/visualization.
- Manage workflow between the National Network Design Team and the newsroom to ensure the creation of quality informational graphics is met.
- Check the content and accuracy of graphics and images to ensure they meet the needs of the News Producers and Directors.
- Work closely with the Art Director and Graphic Supervisor, manage the volume and commissioning of requests to avoid duplication of work, both in the newsroom and for the National Design Team.
- Conceptualize and create daily news graphics for all platforms and maintain Global news branding for various programs and digital platforms.
- Participate in and provide relevant information for daily editorial meetings.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Must be able to work various shifts as required, including evenings and weekends.
Skills and experience you will bring:
- A university degree or equivalent post-secondary education in Graphic Design or Media Arts.
- A minimum of five years of professional graphic design and computer graphic software experience using Adobe Creative Cloud and 3D animation software.
- A background in Journalism or copywriting is an additional asset.
- You are confident in your creative ability and have a keen drive to stay up to date with new and constant changes in graphic software and current design methods and practices.
- Must have leadership qualities to give and take direction.
- Advanced skills in Adobe Creative Suite, 3D Studio Max, or equivalent 3D applications.
- A passion for storytelling using 2D and 3D motion design and how they can be applied to informational graphics.
- Experience with Architectural Design and Virtual Set Technologies would be an asset.
