ROLE PURPOSE


This role will contribute to the establishment and operation of a Ministry of Child and Family Development (MCFD) funded program for youth and children who require full-time specialized care due to multiple psychiatric diagnoses, developmental disabilities, and complex behaviours. The Residence Worker will build relationships with resident(s) and families, and assist residents to live successfully in the residence, ensuring that residents’ physical, emotional, social, educational, and medical needs are met. They will work alongside other staff to assist residents with activities of daily living and the development of life skills.

Unionized; this position requires union membership


HOURS


Mornings (08:00 – 16:00)
Evenings (16:00 – 00:00)
Overnights (00:00 – 08:00)


Casual employees must be available for at least 21 shifts per month in which seven are overnight shifts.



If you are working full-time, or if you are a full-time student, we ask you for 15 shifts of availability per month in which five are overnight shifts (this is subject to employer or enrollment proof).

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES



  • Provides input to the Program Manager and/or other staff regarding the development of appropriate care plans to achieve residents’ objectives

  • Ensures residents follow the terms of their residency and are aware of the rules of the facility

  • Provides emotional support and feedback to residents and their families

  • When assigned, participates in social, recreational, employment, educational and other programs as appropriate to assist residents’ case/care plans

  • Acts as a positive role model for residents, providing life skills training and behaviour management as appropriate

  • Assists with personal hygiene tasks as required


EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS



  • Diploma, preferably in behavioural sciences, social work, human services, psychology, child & youth care, community social services or equivalent with one-year related experience

  • Experience working with children and youth with multiple diagnoses such as autism spectrum disorders, FASD, ADHD, trauma and complex behavioral challenges

  • Experience supporting children and youth who may have significant developmental delays, intellectual, emotional, and social challenges, and multi-barriered families

  • Ability to work with challenging and aggressive behaviours calmly and effectively

  • Ability to work effectively in the conditions of a specialized home environment that may include handling aggressive clients, body fluids and/or other undesirable situations

  • Ability to provide support to children and youth in self-cleaning, hygiene, and daily life-skills

  • Knowledge of theory, principles, and practices in the fields related to the residence

  • Ability to manage time efficiently, high level of accuracy, and attention to detail

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships with families, other team members, clients, partners and stakeholders

  • Strong communication skills (listening, verbal and written)


EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS



  • A Diploma in Social Services and one-year relevant experience is preferred; inhouse training can be provided for the right candidate

  • Professional or lived experience working with vulnerable populations experiencing multiple barriers

  • A demonstrated and clear ability to respond well in crisis situations


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to walk up and down stairs

  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle

  • Ability to move items weighing up to 50 pounds

  • Ability to perform First Aid, CPR, and Naloxone administration

  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time

  • Ability to complete general housekeeping duties (i.e., sweeping, mopping, wiping areas, laundry, changing light bulbs)


REQUIREMENTS



  • Ability to successfully complete a Children and Vulnerable Persons Criminal Records and Ministry of Child and Family Development Clearance Check

  • Ability to successfully pass a reference check

  • Current Emergency First Aid Certificate

  • Autism experience

  • Experience working with aggressive clients

  • Proof of vaccination for communicable diseases may be required as mandated by Government, Health Authority, and/or funder requirements

  • Valid class 5 driver’s license

  • Personal transportation that is in good repair, insured for business up to $1,000,000 for liability, and which can be used to transport residents


COMPENSATION


As Connective is a unionized environment, the starting wage is $26.74 per hour plus 10.6% in lieu of vacation pay and benefits. The wage will increase with every 2,000 hours worked up to a maximum of $30.69 per hour.



Important: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in Canada, observe their weekly hours limit if under a temporary or study visa, and provide proof of eligibility if selected for the role.
