FT - Cook/Dietary Aide (Whitehorse)

ROLE PURPOSE

This position will perform dishwashing, kitchen and porter duties to ensure the smooth running of the Whitehorse Emergency Shelter, in a manner that respects resident privacy and dignity.

LOCATION
Whitehorse, Yukon

STATUS
Unionized; this position is open to applicants of all genders. 

HOURS
40 hours per week; Wednesday - Sunday 6:30 -1700

 

REPORTING AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

  • Reports and is accountable to the Program Manager or their designate
  • Participates as a member of the Connective Administrative Support Team
  • Liaises with staff and volunteers of community and government agencies as required
  • Liaises with the staff of Connective as necessary

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Dishwashing

  • Scrape, wash and sanitize dishes throughout the shift
  • Follow and ensure dishwasher maintenance lists are completed
  • Prepare dish rack with bins for dirty dishes and cutlery for the dining room
  • Collect dishes and cutlery from the dining room for breakfast, lunch and dinner service (including bussing tables if needed)
  • Take out garbage, compost and recycling to proper bins as required
  • Wash and sanitize floors, back sinks, dishwashing machine, carts, and floor mats
  • Detail, label, restock, and organize chemical room and dry storage as required
  • Ensure the inside of the dishwasher machine is drained and cleaned at the end of every meal service
  • Close kitchen (turn off lights, lock all doors, and ensure equipment is off before you leave, etc.)

Kitchen

  • Put away clean laundry to proper areas (rags, uniforms, mop heads, etc.)
  • Maintain & stock coffee cart for lunch/dinner service and restock for night front-end services
  • Prepare and serve lunch, dinner, and night snacks daily
  • Deliver “special needs” meals to clients at the beginning of lunch & dinner

Porter

  • Open kitchen (turn on equipment, put mats down, take out dish racks/garbage bins, etc.)
  • Check and record coolers, fridges, and freezers to ensure proper temperatures
  • Set up and maintain the hot line and the coffee and tea station for breakfast service (restock as required)
  • Assist cook with lunch service including setting up the line and serving clients
  • Portion/Serve dinner to clients

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Function independently, while remaining a crucial member of the support team
  • Adhere to Connective policies and procedures
  • Be able to lift 5-75lbs
  • Exposure to blood, body fluids, hazardous materials (chemicals, acids, latex products, and possible second-hand smoke), bedbugs and/or other pests
  • Be available to work flexible hours as needed. May include some evenings/weekends, as determined by the regional office needs and schedules

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a proven ability to work within a fast-paced, growth-focused environment. The ideal candidate has:

  • A relevant degree, diploma or certificate, or combination of education and experience
  • At least one year of related/transferable experience
  • Ability to manage time efficiently, high level of accuracy, and attention to detail
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships with team members, clients, partners, and stakeholders
  • Strong communication skills (listening, verbal and written)

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to successfully complete a Vulnerable Persons Criminal Records Check
  • Ability to successfully complete a TB Screening
  • Ability to successfully pass a reference check
  • Current Emergency First Aid Certificate
  • An understanding of providing service to people with different learning abilities
  • Demonstrated an ability to deal with potential violence
Important: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in Canada, observe their weekly hours limit if under a temporary or study visa, and provide proof of eligibility if selected for the role.
