We have an exciting opportunity for a Legislative Writer. This position preferably will be a hybrid position in our Toronto office. Candidates preferring to work from home full-time anywhere in Canada will be considered.
What will you do?
Reporting to the Vice President, Communications, you will translate complex federal and provincial policies, regulations, and government updates into clear, timely, and engaging content tailored for small business owners. Your exceptional writing and editing skills will help CFIB deliver concise and relevant insights that empower Canada’s entrepreneurs to navigate changes impacting their businesses.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, edit, and maintain web content on federal and provincial government announcements, policies, and regulatory changes affecting small businesses, and CFIB’s analysis and positioning on those issues.
- Ensure all content is timely, relevant, and easily digestible for a non-expert audience.
- Collaborate with legislative teams across Canada to ensure messaging accuracy and consistency.
- Transform technical or bureaucratic language into plain, accessible language for for a non-expert audience.
- Conduct interviews with staff to provide timely analysis of key legislative, regulatory, and policy developments.
- Organize and maintain legislative and regulatory resources for both internal and external audiences.
- Stay informed of news, trends, and updates to ensure content remains current and relevant.
- Helping with other communications materials as needed
What makes a successful Legislative Writer?
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, public policy, journalism, law, economics, or a related field.
- Proven experience writing about legislation, regulations, or public policy for a general audience. Experience in journalism or corporate communications is an asset.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Ability to analyze and synthesize complex information into clear, actionable insights.
- Proficiency in content management systems and web publishing tools. Knowledge of SEO principles and best practices for digital content is an asset.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Familiarity with legislative processes and government structures.
- Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset.
