Position Overview:  As a member of the Recreation Department, the Camper Support Counsellor will be responsible to support the positive behavior of children at camp. The supervision and safety of participants is the number one priority. This position works with staff and parents/caregivers to provide information and assistance with caring for a child’s emotional and behavioral needs. They will assist the day camp counsellors and Child & Youth Coordinator with potential behavior problems/situations that arise during the summer. They are responsible for modeling and demonstrating positive leadership to fellow leaders and counsellors in training while working alongside the rest of the team to plan and implement program itineraries which provide meaningful and age-appropriate activities for children and youth in our community.

 

This position is for someone who is a friendly, confident, and a team player, with a proven dedication to providing exceptional care and programming for youth. The ideal candidate will have graduated from or be currently enrolled in, a post-secondary program, in the field of education, social work, psychology, outdoor pursuits, adaptive sports, or recreation. A current certification in Standard First Aid and CPR is required. Childcare, day camp, or relevant experience with children with diverse needs is essential.

 

Core Accountabilities:

  • Plan, implement, and support all activities to meet the physical, emotional, and social needs of participants
  • Support all day camp staff with addressing difficult behaviors, behavior management forms, and finding positive child focused solutions
  • Create plans for success with campers and their parents as needed, addressing their strengths and using appropriate strategies
  • Assist with evaluating program content and participant satisfaction
  • Work effectively within a team environment
  • Contribute to creating an enthusiastic and positive day camp environment
  • Model appropriate behavior, language, and proper hygiene
  • Effective communication with staff members and respective supervisor(s)
  • Punctuality and promptness is paramount to support the program’s success;
  • Review and follow Town of Canmore policy and procedures

  • Able to work outside in a variety of weather conditions & outdoor pursuits
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

 

Education & Qualifications:

  • Post secondary education in the field of education, social work, psychology, recreation or relevant experience.
  • A deep understanding of children and their needs
  • Knowledge and understanding of positive behavior management techniques.
  • Current certification in Standard First Aid and CPR level C is required
  • Successful completion of a background RCMP/Police Records Check

  • Experience with children with diverse needs
  • Ability to participate in day camp related activities, e.g. swimming, hiking
  • Ability to be patient and kind, and firm when necessary
  • Ability to speak clearly, inspire trust and confidence and motivate children
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to be flexible and versatile in changing circumstances (e.g. weather, behavior)
  • Ability to deal creatively and effectively with challenges
  • Strong organizational skills related to program delivery
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other leaders, support staff, and parents
  • Ability to manage and prioritize a number of tasks at once
  • Ability to deal with people sensitively, tactfully, and professionally at all times

Work Schedule:  This is a full - time temporary seasonal position (40 hours), leading camps during the Canmore Summer break from June 17th – August 23rd.  The work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 5:30pm.
